I'm watching that Open Water movie and man, that is some scary sh.t.
I've come up a couple of times and the boat is relativly far away but
never so far that I couldn't whistle and get their attention. The
divemaster in the movie did a cruddy job of not having a list of names
and checking them off that way as they came into the boat and just
before they weighed anchor...I guess I keep counting my lucky stars so
far

We discussed this awhile back... Just remember, it's a movie... If they
showed what really happens on dive trips, no one would watch the movie...
It's not that we are boring f.cks, it's just that they don't appreciate our
special characteristics... <grin

I watched that movie on a 16-hour flight to Hong Kong, around
Christmas.  I didn't that that movie was as bad as some panned
it to be.  To me, it showed that it COULD happen when no-one
made any "obvious blunder", even with hind sight.

Sure the DM could've counted names or do a dozen other things
fo prevent that kind of "lost diver" occurrence.  But I recall
a dive at Key Largo, in which there were 24 divers on one boat,
and the DM told everyone to pop up to the surface every 15
minutes or so, for HIS benefit.  :-)  He could have lost half
the boat and wouldn't have known the difference.  <G>

On the same flight, I watched "Bad Santa", the movie with an
anal-fixed Santa who was a foul-mouthed drunk and a cynic, with
his helper who was a black midget of equal versatility in F and
S and MF words, as his accomplice in theft.

Both of them would have been completely at home here.  :-)

THAT movie was definitely more entertaining then Open Water.

That and, at least so far, the Lonergans haven't held any press conferences to offer
their version of the real-life circmstances. For all we know, they were right at the
stern platform, masks pushed up onto their foreheads and still wiping dive boogers
off their noses when the boat just pulled away because the DM miscounted. I'm sure
all of the other divers enjoyed their coffee on the ride back, though.

I doubt it.  Aussies make lousy coffee.

I hope that people realize just how hard it is to see a diver in open ocean.
Good reason to carry a whistle, an inflatable safety marker, a strobe light.
I carry all of the above. They are all nicely stowed away, yet completely
accessible.

I can yell real loud and have a big head.

As a movie, I thought it was very boring.  The wife and I prayed that
the sharks would take them when the couple were arguing and nattering
at each other in the water.

OTOH, it's tough to make a movie of any type, esp. low budget, in
which most of it takes place in the water, with nothing else around,
and involves only 2 people.

You've been lucky, or you have not dived long enough!  It happens TOO OFTEN!
