Well, another one is in the books.

Thanks to all who showed up and participated.

Thanks to all the scooter race participants that didn't show. The trophy has a
good home amongst my motocross trophies.

Hope to see a few more online faces next year so we can burn some poor
unfortunate animals on the grill.

Happy New Year to all rec.scubans.

I tried to spear a manatee and bring it by, but despite the spearguns in the
Crystal River dive shop, they wouldn't loan me one to try once they found out
I was going over to King Spring! :) :) :)

Seriously, nice meeting 'ya, and that was a very interesting scooter design
you had. Stacy and I were brainstorming something to take away your trophy
next year...... if I can get it to work, it'll definitely draw giggles and
perhaps more than a few gasps :)

So, what were the rules for the scooter races? What depth were they
required to be at, etc? I take it that having a gasoline powered scooter
that had a snorkel (like the old diesel subs) would not have been
acceptable... Is it a straight line race or some sort of course where
maneuverability might affect your design of a scooter? Do you have to be
towed by the scooter or can you ride astride it? I'm thinking a piece of
12" (or larger) PVC water pipe about 12-14 ft long, filled up with deep
cycle marine batteries with the largest electric motor that would physically
fit in the water pipe and a prop from an outboard... A couple of hand and
foot pegs to hold on with and something to lock yourself into so that you
don't slip off the back into the prop... Hell, a couple of cases of beer and
we could flesh out this design into something that Darwin would be proud
of...

And some people wonder why women live longer than us guys...

I thought better of your creativity. Give it a gas motor, a jet drive and a
dose of NO2 . . . in a scuba tank. Nothing to it.

I can come up with an even simpler design... and for the duration required,
it'd work real well. Gonna try building it too... :)

I dismissed the concept of a gasoline powered engine since I figured that
the distance required might be such that it would be prohibitive to have to
carry the O2 source with you since a carb is going to need at least 250 cfm
for even a non-performance one and perhaps 1150 cfm if you start talking
about running a blower on it... The size of the scooter starts getting a
little wider also and we'll definitely need some sort of winglets with
ailerons to counteract the P-factor... Considering what I've seen done with
batteries and a large electric motor for a top-fuel-like dragster, I think
that battery power could provide enough for us to make Darwin proud without
having to resort to internal combustion engines... If the rules are such
that an enclosed cockpit is not allowed (i.e. no subs), we should be able to
get up to a speed that it would make it difficult to remain attached to the
vehicle... Never underestimate the power of creative minds, sufficient
alcohol, and sufficent funding...

There's not really any rules. The course was only 5 or so feet deep so there
are no real sealing issues. Sort of like open class motocross. Run what you
brung.

Sure it would. I was probably 3 or so feet underwater for the whole course,
except when I had to pick up my mask.

The day after Christmas, I told Jayna I want a welder for my birthday in
March. You may have given me a project worth spending some time on. I
doubt it, but you never know.

Care to share anything on velocity of recent entries and the length/duration
of the course? There's no point in dragging something all over the country
that has no chance of being competitive.

Tools make nice gifts. I got a framing nailer for Christmas and I am happy
about that. All I need is for Jammer to come give me classes on how to use it
and I will be ready to get busy.

As far as the course of the scooter race, it started at the steps at Little
Devil spring, went down the run out into the Santa Fe river, around the marker
bouy for Devils Ear and back. It wasn't measured but figure probably 100 yds
out and 100 back. I did it in a little under 3.5 minutes wearing full cave
gear (dub 95's, BP/W, cannister light etc.)

If Ron was accurate about his distances and time, then he was averaging
about 1.95 mph... 100 yds per leg * 2 legs * 3 ft per yd / 3.5 minutes * 60
minutes per hour / 5280 ft per mile...

Not even enough to get Darwin to wake up...

The design Stacy and I hashed out on the way home will definitely get plenty
of giggles - and maybe some gasps - if we can get it built and working... :->

That is if whichever of us rides the thing don't end up winning one of
those awards during the testing - before we get there :->

Distance is pretty accurate.... I didn't clock the time. He was definitely
putting out an interesting "bow wave" off his head while running though :->

Same here. The kids seemed to hit it right off. My sons had fun fishing and
hanging out with your daughter.

Sounds like fun. I'm working on a hydrogen fuel cell powered one for next
year. That will mean duct taping my mask to my head, but anything to win a
race ;o)

Sorry I didn't run into you, ended up diving a couple of sites near
Luraville on Friday. We picked sites where competition for the cave was
very light.

Sounds like I missed a chance to "bark" and test a pee-valve. <evil
grin>
