My cruise ship will be stopping over in Ocho Rios in Jamaica.  Has anyone
here ever dived in Ocho Rios before? Is it worthwhile?

Everything I've read about Jamaica says that the only decent diving is in
Negril.  I've never been diving at Ocho rios though, so I couldn't say.  I
greatly enjoyed diving in Negril the two times I've been to Jamaica though.

Diving Negril was "ok". Nothing great about it. The soft coral and
spounge were good, but the marine life has been over fished. But, diving
is diving. If there is water whenever I go on vacation, I will be diving.

While Negil diving is ok, you gotta get to other dive locations.

It's bad luck to be superstitious

I didn't dive there but it didn't rate very high.

I did Dunn's RIver instead.  Just don't get detoured thru the Jamaican
village at the top of the falls.

I dived there. It's crap.

Go to Dunns River.

I've done both.  Even though I hate shopping, I'd probably go shopping.

Barring that, I'd do the dive...the freshwater coming down out of Dunns
includes a pinch of untreated sewerage, and its very easy to accidently
ingest enough during the climb to get a case of the runs.

Also, if you do Dunns, don't take a good non-waterproof camera...take a
waterproof.  A very old scam here is for your guide to carry your camera
for you (because you're more likely to get it wet), and its possession
gives him a nice bit of leverage for extorting a nice cash tip from you
at the end of the climb.

That's pretty scarey.  Convinced me not to go diving there.

there is no diving at Dunn's River if that is what you are asking.

I was planning to do both but reading some of these posts got me worried
about the diving.  When you said it's crap, do you mean there's not much
fish to see down there?

Clint,

I have also cruise ship dived there, Coral Garden and Carib Trench were the
sites. Marine life was very scarce to say the least. The reason for me
wanting to dive there was to get another island in my log book.

On the other hand, I didn't find Dunn's River to be that exciting. While
shopping in town can be interesting (drug dealers), it's not all that great.
IMHO, diving isn't that bad of a choice given the other options.

I resemble that remark!

My post (last month) in rec.scuba.locations summarized it as follows:

RF>  I've ever done anywhere in the Caribbean.   ;-(
