I'm going to Nice next June for a week.  I hear there is good diving in
Northern Italy and may want to do a day trip.  Any suggestions?

Well what they have in Liguria (near Nice) is wall to wall wrecks! But it
is bloody difficult to get them organised to do a morning dive. Most of
the operations on the coast are pretty part-time and really only spring
to life fully in July & August. At other times you usually get "well we
may be going tomorrow, ring in the morning and see if we have enough
divers" kinda thing.
I think most Italians dive in clubs and there isn't enough demand for
full-time dive operations outside July/August.

The other thing you need to be aware of is that they think nothing of
doing a 50m.+ dive if that is where the wreck is.

There is a full-time dive operation on the port in Nice though. They seem
to dive every day & have a PADI flag on their portacabin so they must be
professional ;-)

Or to get a parking lot!!

If the wreck is deep, go deep. If you know how to handle decompression,
and are relatively immune to narcosis, what's the problem.

Besides, the many parts of the Mediterranean is nice in the first ten
meters, then sort of slimy down to 35m, then it will clear up and be
spectacular.
Mostly in the deep below the thermocline you can find lobster, Gorgonia,
tunicatae, seaanemones, thuna, and bigger fish of which I currently
miss the english names.
You can even find fluorescending Gorgonia and anemones at and below 50m.
As well as black coral.

Hi Matthias,

Well I find that they think nothing of doing a 50 or 60 meter dive with
15m.+. of deco stops. It is a bit of a shock to find this is a relatively
normal dive for local divers!!

Whereabouts are you (a proposito)?

You have to get accustomed to it, and take slow steps, and not, in any
case, exert yourself, or be low hydrated.
And for a 60m dive, a good first deep decompression stop may be much
deeper, typically between 42 and 37m.

North of Hamburg, just short of the North Pole.

Spent some time diving this year again at Costa Brava, Hyères, Capri (
cap san Angelo) Ischia, Sorrento, Lipari Isles., almost in Portofino, (
Rebreather Rallye)but no parking lots, and the Garage parking was 9€ per
hour, Lake Garda.

Hi Matthias,

The problem I have with those deep deco. stops is: my computer is still
adding deco! The preferred method (I encountered) seems to be to ascend
slowly in a group and all stop at the first divers indicated stop.
Everybody then compares deco requirements, hopefully you and your buddy
are similar, so you ascend together until both your 1st. stops are done
and then to the next indicated stop etc. An effort was made to pair up
divers with similar computers as the newer ones gave more deco stops.

Italy is the only place I see divers on the trains, so even they have
parking problems. An Italian will normally park ANYWHERE!

I thought it was a lot of effort for approx. 10 minutes bottom-time if
there wasn't much too see! I would only bother again if the object was
something spectacular.

I have dived in the Med. about 30 times, mostly Italy, Sardinia, Minorca,
& Cyprus. I was only impressed with Sardinia, lovely caves and they
haven't eaten all the fish there! Most of the Med. seems to ba a fish-
free zone.

Just give a damn. As long as you have enough gas. It is your health, and
the deep stops are more than superficially beneficial. The impede and
hinder the building of microbubbles, which may do damage on further ascent.
And if others are worried, well give a damn, make your partner be with
you, and let him/her have the beenfit form a better decompression as
well. It can be felt.

I used a VR3 and an Aladin Nitrox pro for redundancy. With a 15 l
bottle, the dive times were always around 70 minutes, and regardless of
depth ( 35m to 72 m) decompression always was finished after 60minutes
counting from descent.

Why in a group. With single partner it is better. Doesn't scare that
much fish.

and all stop at the first divers indicated stop.

Indeed, that is a nuisance.

Not in curbs where there are busses going!.

All protected areas are good with fish. Some other are still spectacular
for the landscape ( Gozo, Port Cros (both), Capri, Vulcano, Lipari)

Thanks to all for information.  As a new member, appreciate the
excellent response.  As a true "recreational" diver (warm water, sherpas
for tank changes, pretty fish, not deep), I think I'll just work on my
tan and enjoy the fine wine!
