Other than discomfort, what are the consequences of not equalizing your
mask at depth?

Well, you could rupture your eardrum, which wouldn't be much fun.
I equalise every 2-3' on the way down. Any problems and you ascend a
couple of feet and try again. You don't continue your descent unless
you can equalise.
As you're going down, the air on the inside your of your eardrums is
compressed and the pressure is reduced. But on the outside the
pressure is increasing. This is a "squeeze." You equalise to bring
the 2 pressures into equilibrium.

Not ears. Mask.

He said "equalizing your mask". I believe Whistler is well aware that given
enough mask squeeze, you can get some nasty red spots on yer eyeballs, not
to mention the dreaded mask face.
Mike, you must remember way back when you first started diving and sometimes
you'd have that sensation of having your eyeballs sucked out of yer head?

I always thought that was zombie divers.

OK, I'd just played hockey, had a few beers, it was late, and I didn't
read it right. The beer was Sleemans, BTW.
I just gotta pay better attention. Sorry, Whistler.

Your ears? from not equalizing your mask?

Try it and find out.

Hematomae. Very colorful.
I have yet to pop my eyes out of my head but I've heard that can be
exciting.

hee hee, I should have read ahead.

You have to go pretty deep to do that. If you're not diving mix you'll be so narced
when it happens that you won't even notice until you get back above 100'. On the
upside, if your mask has side lenses you'll have excellent peripheral vision.

No they won't

Your nose will turn inside out too.

Makes it easier to pick that way.

Mask squeeze also causes a receding hairline.

Which makes it less likely hair will get stuck in the seal and cause
leakage. I envy bald divers sometimes.

You should. Do you envy the mask squeeze induced underbite?

I'd love you more if you shaved your head just for me. If you're naturally
bald, that's cheating. You can redeem yourself by breaking all the blood
vessels in your eyeballs and accompanying me to the bar of your choice.

not naturally bald but definitely hair challenged. It now grows faster
on my ears, out my nose, eyebrows, too.
I've broken the eye vessels, and someday will accompany to the bar of
one of our choice.

pressure on eyes and sinuses
gudmundur - 24 Sep 2004 14:28 GMT

It would feel like you hooked a vacuum cleaner to your eyeballs, and
face. Then, probably if your mask got kicked or knocked loose, (which might
take some effort being that it is sucked fast to your face) the inrush
of water would probably flood your nose and sinuses where you had been
maintaining a lower than ambient pressure. I should think you could
then practice gagging through your regulator.
Chris Guynn - 24 Sep 2004 14:43 GMT

The pressure can deform the skirt and allow water to enter. That sucks.

Bursting all the blood vessels in your eyes
I've seen it and it's not pretty. The guy said it didn't hurt, but
I wasn't believing. He only got to 30 feet, too.

Also bloody nose and sinus problems.
