Upstate NY is a very large place.

Where exactly do you live?

Bob Sherwood is a GUE instructor (gue.com), top notch diver, top notch
guy.  If you are interested in cheap and quick, he's not your guy.  If
you are interested in someone who really knows what the hell he is
talking about, he's your guy.

It doesn't matter. You need Basic Open Water training. For that
you'll need a teacher and agency qualified to teach that. PADI, Naui,
SSI...

Never heard of it.

Ya I know Bob.  I purchased my first set of equipment (mask, fins, snorkel)
from All About Scuba.  Bob is obviously a highly qualified SCUBA trainer but
he is expensive and doesn't have any classes untill January.  His private
lessons run $1,500.00.  That is way too high for an Open Water
certification.

I found a guy in Syracuse that will do a private lesson, all materials,
equipment, and dives for $465.00, and if there is a second person $310.00
per person for the same thing.

If anyone in upstate ny is interested in getting certified I would be
interested in doing a semi-private group with the above mentioned person in
Syracuse.  Let me know.
