If, during a beach dive, after I have successfully passed the dreaded
SBS zone, I am in a 33' depth and have taken a breath just as a 10'
wave crested over me instantly putting me in 43' of water, if the wave
speed is faster than I can exhale, will my lungs blow up?

Waves break when the wave height is approximately 3/4 of the water
depth. Thus your ten foot wave will not be a wave in 33' of water. It
will more likely be a 5' swell. Since divers dive in 33' of water with
5' swells routinely, and none have had their lungs explode (that I know
of), the answer is No. But you knew that anyway. And if you are in 7.5
feet of water with 10 foot waves crashing on you, you should be boogie
boarding, not scuba diving.

So true.

Its sad we had to lose so many to SBS before learning this.

Before enlightenment, Sanded Brain Syndrom claimed way to many victims.

We are told that if we hold our breath and rise 4 feet, our lungs will
POP.
How can this sudden 5 foot difference be immune from those same forces
and consequences?

Those that told you, lied and you weren't smart enough to notice and because
you don't understand the dynamics of the situation.

They lied:  The risk is not from a rise of 4 feet while holding your breath.
It's from a chance in pressure equivalent to a change of 4 feet while you're
near the surface and your lungs are full.  Even at that, you're being
misled.  Your lungs are never full . . . unless you started holding your
breath earlier.

Dynamics: The pressure you experience while a wave passes over is not equal
to the depth of the column directly above, but the average of the depth of
the water approximately above.  Since waves are accompanied by troughs, the
average pressure changes less than you would expect as a wave passes over.
Here's a hit to assure you this is true.  When you dive in a pool, do your
ears equalize in say, 6 feet?  When a wave passes over, do you have to
equalize them then too?  See?

Yes.  I've had this happen to me several times and, in fact, have been
dead for a number of years.

no, but if you take the breath at the 43' point, and the wave passes,
bringing you back to 33' is not a big enough change,
only about 25%. some of that you will already have exhaled.

This is how I understand the science behind your question.

If you are hovering at 43' (sea water), the ambient pressure is
approximately 2 10/33 ATM.  When the wave passes and you go to 33', you are
at 2 ATM.  The percentage change would then be 10/33 / (2 10/33), or
approximately 13%.  This means that the air in your lungs would increase in
volume by about 13%.  At the same time, you are exhaling so the volume
change should be somewhat less than this, but depends on how fast you exhale
and how fast the wave passes.  I'd guess that 13% volume change (the maximum
in your scenario with breath holding) wouldn't be enough to cause serious
damage as long as you hadn't already filled your lungs to capacity (or very
near capacity).

Yes.

But if you keep breathing continuously, as you know you are suposed to do,
you will be able to exhale fast enough.

Somplace I read about a diver hanging at 10ft for a decompression stop.
Seems he was hanging on a line fixed to the bottom, not to a float on
the surface.  The diver died from a lung expansion injury.  The only
explaination was that he must have held is breath wile a wave trough
came past and reduced the ambient pressure.

Now this is an anecdotal experience and doesn't really proove or even
demonstrate anything.  But the "best advice" as reagards you question is
"Don't do that!"

There's no rule that says you should breathe continuously or any reason why
there should be.

Bullshit.  Somewhere I read about a man that could jump over tall buildings

Yeah.
Which rant were you refering to Joe?

The one about GOP terrorists storming the Miami/Dade courthouse,
shutting down the recount of votes? Violence to influence the outcome
of an election?

Is talking about that a rant?

The one where I question the utter failure of the bush coup to protect
US on 9/11 and their lieing about being warned? Is questioning his
ineptitude a rant?

Are you proposing that they DID protect US on 9/11?

Smart bombs that spread drink can look alike mines that resemble the
color of the food packs being distributed in the same area. Is it a
rant to talk about "Smart Bombs" with "Brain Farts"?

The PNAC. I bet its the PNAC'ers you don't agree with me on. Is
quoting their own Agenda some how a rant. In 1997 their plan was world
leadership. When they had their chance to show their style, they chose
War instead of leadership.

Dennis, Dennis, Dennis,

Of course he did. He went from downstairs and counting to upstairs
because"We can't work in this riot.

Moved upstairs. Riot moved upstairs. He quit the count with "We can't
work in a riot"

Police called to escort terrorized workers. They do.

Leahy talks to Penelas. Leahy then says " I wasn't scared" " Honest"
Leahy keeps job then gets better one. Penelas just voted out.

http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Alex_Penelas

"Penelas refused to campaign alongside Al Gore, and made no comments
during the controversy over Miami-Dade County's ballots in the
aftermath of the election. This led many Democrats to criticize
Penelas as a Republican turncoat, although he has since apologized for
his actions"

He apologized? I wonder if he gave back his "Commission" ;) :) ;)

Well, the GOP protest started, IIRC because they moved the counts t an area
that folks could not observe.

Dennis,
You have to be the most dis-honest, integrity lacking sock puppet
here.

4 years you have been arguing, denying known facts, just blah, blah,
balh, denials only to find that you don't look at facts. Just GOP
damage control talking points.

4 years I've talked about the scum in pnac who actually were the ones
working in the background sabotaging your government as well as mine.
This week you finally said OH, there is a pnac. Showing that you never
bothered to look at links all the time you were saying "Cite".
