Looking for recommendations on a good dive operator in Maui, preferably
Kehei or Lahaina based.

Are you planning on boat diving or shore diving or both?  I spent a week
in Maui this spring, and went to a few shops.  Both the "Maui Dive Shop"
and the "SCUBA Shack" had good-quality rentals.  The main advantage of
the Maui Dive Shop is that they have shops scattered across Maui (Main
shop in Kihei, small shops in Lahaina and other places), so you can buy
a fill card and get your tanks filled nearly anywhere on the island with
that card.  The SCUBA shack had weight-intigrated stuff, if that's what
you're looking for.

If planning on doing shore dives, check out shorediving.com - there's a
pretty good list of sites there.  The Maui dive shop also has a free
"magazine" (pages of adds with the odd site-map) which you can get at
there shop with some decent site maps.  If you'd like some advice for
shore sites feel free to drop me a line (here, or directly); I'd be
happy to tell you which ones we thought were the best/worst.

As for boats, all I can comment on is the Maui Dive Shop's smaller
boat.  The boat holds about 12, and wasn't too crowded.  They have a
larger "cattle boat"; I'd avoid that one.  The guides we had were pretty
good, and did a great pre-diving briefing.  Lunch and snacks are
provided.  Not a luxury cruise by any measure; but for a guy used to
jumping out of a zodiac it was pretty damn good.  Guides did a good job
splitting us up by experience, so I didn't have to dive with some
air-pig-newbie.  I have no experience with other boat operators on Maui
so I can't really give you a direct comparison.  Maybe someone else here
can. . .

I dove with Lahaina Divers located of the old town
pier.................no problems..nice operation...........very
expensive. But worth it.

They have a good schedule ...................and cater very well to
their customers.

I disagree (see my post in r.s.e.). The fact that they offer nitrox,
but only on shallw, hard bottom dive sites should also tell you
someting about their typical customers

I did the back side of Molokini with them on nitrox but that was a few years
ago.

I dove with them three years ago, and they specifically wouldn't allow
nitrox on the backside of Molokini.

Well if you want to dive nitrox then you should dive with an operator
that make those provisions.

I knew Robinson was good but I did not wanted to drive 45 minutes to
the run down town of Khei and leave so early...........

But of all places I been to dive 99.9% use regular air.

The exception was on Bonaire where a lot of people used nitrox during
their shore dives.

I tried Lahaina Divers, it was a big boat, so I got the cattle boat
experience, I wouldn't recommend it.

On the other hand, Scuba Shack was really great, great personalized
service.
