I'm thinking about going down to Belize to scuba dive. During the days I
won't be diving, I would like to visit some decent Mayan ruins. Does
anybody know how far or how long it takes to get to decent ruins from the
prime scuba diving areas in Belize?

There are daytrips from Ambergris.
Some ruins are more accessible than others. We went from Belize to
Tikal after the diving was over, but we went from the Cayo District.
That is also possible as a daytrip.

A ways. If money isn't an object, you can fly to Tikal from Ambergris.
I spent the first 3 days of my trip out on the western border going over
the border one day, into the caves the next. Then went back east for the
island.

From Belize City it was about a 45 minute bus ride followed by a 45
minute boat ride on the river to the Lamanai ruins (submerged
crocodile). It's not that it was that far from the city in miles, it's
just that the road structure didn't support a high speed of travel.
Very worthwhile.

If you'd like to go to Tikal in Guatemala, consider flying. Check out
the following as well, our land based trip offerings to this site were
