Hello

I am attending my first PADI Open Water class tonight....

No one here seems to know what the de-fogger drops are made from. The bottle
doesn't say anywhere. Anyone have a clue?

It's drool collected from the male spectators during the Olympic Women's
Beach Volleyball tournament.

You must've been watching the Italians, as was I.

I didn't know thongs were Olympic gear.

Hi Phantom8R,

Mask defog composition is a tricky topic. Most people don't actually know
what the stuff is made of. I am aware though that it is non-toxic.However
you can make your own utilizing a mix of baby shampoo and water.

Our shop carries "Sea Drops" which is an effective anti-fog which requires
application before each dive. There are other products that are like pastes
which do not require continual re-application. Typically a $5.00 bottle of
Sea drops should last the average diver over a season of use.

Until you loan it to someone or you lose it.  One of these generally happens
to me every 3rd or 4th dive.

Do you sell a lot of 5$ dottles of seadrops with your 1200$ scuba gear?

Hello Popeye,

As a diver you should know that In all honesty, a $5.00 bottle of Seadrops
(or other defog) isn't a bad investment. Alternatively, if your a technical
diver, you may very well develop your own homemade recipe.... but at the end
of the day, you understand the down-to-earth need of mask defog.

Kudos to you!

Seadrops isn't a bad investment, I have 14-14 bottles of the stuff in my dive
gear.

$5 for Seadrops is a bad investment.

 Fog-X.

 Works like a charm.

Ah, Pops, not to be critical, but how do you spell masturbation?

Whereas your spit is free and works better.
brad@The Deep End - 10 Sep 2004 16:17 GMT
Yeah but after those long nights, spit might be well....

Gross? You know those ones that kinda glide across your mask and doesn't
really separate easily.... and you question whether or not to stick your
finger in it and smear it around? Hrm. I'll pass.

hehehe

That's why one stays well hydrated.

I didn't say you should blow your nose in it.

Of course, you stick your finger in it and smear it around.  How else will
you ensure you've covered the whole mask face.  Then you rinse it once in
sea water.  Bingo, bango, no fog.

It's dive instructor spit. (Diluted baby shampoo will do.)

De-fogger is a surfactant.  It causes the condensing water droplets to sheet
together rather than to bead up individually.  The most common and powerful
surfactants which can be used on a mask are detergents.
Suitable cleaners that can be used include window cleaner and shampoo.  Many
years ago I was touring a major scuba equipment manufacturer's facility.  I
saw cases of gallon bottles of cheap window cleaner that they were
repackaging and selling as de-fog.  I have found that those little bottles
of shampoo that they give you in motel rooms also works quite well.

I have found that one of the 'spritz on' bottles seemed via smell and
residual taste to be nothing more than 30% ivory liquid, and 70% water.
I am not saying that is bad, the stuff works great. It came with my mask.
I spritz it on while suiting up. It will be nearly dried by the time I
am ready to hit the water. I do a super quick light rinse, and I am fog
free the rest of the day. Well, unless I flood my mask for 'clearing'
practice. (Basic skill practice? What the hell is that?)
I am thinking when this store bought stuff runs out, I will try an ivory
mix, and see if it works equally as well.

Bless to you, Safe fog free diving!!
