I just purchased a new s40 tank and k valve for my daughter, received
separately.  Are there steps required prior to just screwing in the
valve to the tank?

Specifically:
1. does the o-ring require a coating of lubricate/protector?
2. how tight must the valve be screwed down?
3. any other steps that may be required

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much for your patience.

Yes. Take it to the dive shop that you expect will be filling it
and ask them to do a VIP.

Nobody is going to fill it for you until you have one.

When they're done, they'll assemble it for you.

safe diving,

I'd hope the tank and your daughter came seperately, for your wife's sake at
the least.

>1. does the o-ring require a coating of lubricate/protector?

Just a touch of Krytox or Cristo-Lube on both the O-ring and the
bottom two or three threads of the valve.

>2. how tight must the valve be screwed down?

Just a tap beyond hand-tight.  The O-ring seals it.  You need it only
tight enough so that the valve won't accidentally spin off if you let
the tank get to "0".  Do not wrench it on and smack it with a rubber
mallet.  If you see someone at a dive shop begin to put a wrench on
your valve, politely ask them not to do it.  The valve is soft brass.
The tank is soft aluminum.  Gorillas will damage them.

>3. any other steps that may be required

Nope.

In my PSI class, they recommended 45-50 ft. lbs.  to seat the valve.
Catalina also says 50 on their website.  CGA says a max of 60 ft. lbs. for
aluminum tanks.
