Hi. I want to buy a camera for underwater photography when I dive. Any
suggestions? Is 35mm OK for this? Would I need special housing for the
camera?

different format......

This guy is a notorious troll (rec.pets, rec.photo and
rec.woodworking). Watch out for further postings, frequent name
changes, and posted links to pr0n sites.

If you already own a 35mm camera, visit Ikelite for a housing.  If not, the
Nikonos is always good.  Why did you ask in a woodworking group?

If he wants a housing that floats that would be a good place to start ;)

Go to the following site:

This was put together by Peter Schulz who is an extremely bright guy,
and only recently took up underwater photography. His pics (elsewhere on
the same site) prove he knows whereof he speaks.

If you run into a man eating shark, wouldn't a bib be more appropriate than a
gun?

Oh, sorry...you meant a man-eating shark!

That was cheap. No, it was worse than cheap: it was predictable.

No, I believe he was correct first time...

1. Man-eating shark - use camera to shoot.
2. Man, eating shark - use gun.

Haven't been around here long, have you?

Guns don't kill people. People kill people. And sharks.

Thus we've started the "gun" phase of this thread. Who wants to handle "sex"?

Man-eating shark - stab your buddy with your knife and enjoy the show.
Man, eating shart -- spit or swallow?

Needs a can of Spare Air, too.

And make sure you're properly weighted....half ton ought to be enough. Them
cameras can be really buoyant.

I hope your checkbook is up to the strain you are about to put on it.
Underwater photography is expensive, somewhere in the range of 4 times as
expensive as land photography of comparable quality.

A 35 mm camera will work, but the trend is moving toward ditigal.  There are
some cameras designed for use without a housing and some that require one.
If you're going with a housed camera, I strongly suggest you shop for the
housing first.  They are usually as expensive or even more expensive than
the camera that goes in them and are not available, off the shelf, for all
cameras.  Once you have a good idea on what housings are available, shop for
cameras that are compatable and offer whatever features you prefer.  If you
want good photos and true color, you're going to want at least one and
probably two strobes.

None of this is cheap.

I picked up a  PT-016 housing I for an Olympus mju400 (digital) - ?59.99,
special offer while stocks last from:
http://www.cameraworld.co.uk/AccessorieShopping.asp?ProductId=1178

Also fits the mju300 and allows full operation of all the camera functions.

Next thing will be to get a strobe.

That really depends. The best way to find out is to take your camera on a
dive - if the photos come out then you don't need a housing. If they don't
then you'll need an enclosure... ;-)

Go digital.

Check out the SeaLife Reefmaster.  Good piece of kit.  I have one of
their original digital cameras, the 1.3 megapixel version.  The
cameras are even better now and the housings, strobes, etc were always
good.

hi
there are several different ways  u can go, re: 35 mm, u can buy a 35 mm
Nikonos V camera which doesnt need a housing or u can get a 35 mm SLR camera
and buy a housing to fit it.    but before u go out and by a 35 mm SLR land
camera, first u need to make sure that u can get a nice housing, several
different UW companies make housing for SLR example Sea and Sea or Ikelite.
Second u might want to take a UW photo class, rent or buy a cheap snap
camera before u spend the $$$ for a nice system.   the sea and sea UW set up
i have for my Nikon N90s total for everything i need was about $7000.

u might want to get into digital equipment its the new thing now days in UW
photos.  take care
