Anybody else having this problem?

Lee Bell - 27 Oct 2003 16:00 GMT I'm having a most unusual problem.
Periodically, twice in the last week, my Outlook Express lost my subscription to all newsgroups and, in fact, the newsgroups themselves. Each time, the program had to refresh the groups and I had to resubscribe. That's just a bit annoying since there were over 17,000 rec.scuba messages showing as unread. Since I'm on line pretty much every day, I've built a filter to show only today's messages (actually gets todays and yesterdays, but nothing is perfect). It gets me around the 17,000 message problem, but not the inconvenience.
Anybody else having the same problem?
My news service is news.east.earthlink.net.

Don't filter, just right-click and "catch up" or synchronize headers and go have a cup of coffee. Reported message cnt is often significantly higher than actual available.
Don't know why you lost them, but I suspect your boat mechanic was in the vicinity.

Although even the best "mechanic" will have problems with inherently defective products.

Actually, I do both. If I don't cut the list down, I have to figure out what I've already seen versus what I've yet to see. With a filter allowing only same day postings, I get much less old stuff, making it a lot easier to pick out what I've not yet seen. Then I catch up and am back on track.

What I've found that works well with OE is to not use filters to only view the recent messages, but to delete the ones that I've not read... Another advantage of this is that it takes less disk storage space (assuming you manage it correctly)... I've had cases where I accidentally unsubscribed from a newsgroup or was setting up a new machine and didn't want to have to read through all the messages on the newsgroup, so I went to the menu option "View -> Current View -> Group Messages by Conversation" and unchecked it... I then clicked on the "Sent" column header in the message list so that the messages would be sorted by date... I then scrolled down to the last message that I had read (or the first one from which I was wanting to ignore all previous messages) and highlighted it... I then do a <Shift-End> to highlight all the messages from that point to the end of the list and press the <Delete> key... Now, they're all deleted and you can go back to "View -> Current View -> Group Messages by Conversation" to put the messages back in the normal grouping format if you so desire...
Personally, I also keep a normal OE folder that is named the same as the newsgroup that I copy messages to that I haven't had a chance to read, but might want to read at a future date... This allows me to keep the actual newsgroup as a sort of newsgroup inbox folder and thus it doesn't get that large.. Since the copying of these postings to this normal OE folder also downloads the message body, I can read and reply to these messages when I'm not on the internet (e.g. when flying commercial airlines or waiting in airports) and once I connect back to the internet, the messages get sent out... The normal OE folder also allows me to know which messages I have already downloaded and I can just delete any messages from the normal newsgroup folder if it downloads everything like you are periodically experiencing...

Perhaps, but Lee was talking about OE and I posted what I have found to work well for me with OE... I've also got Mozilla installed on this machine, but truthfully, OE seems to be quicker... I also havene't figured out a way to just delete a post from the list of posts...

You have your observations, I have mine.

If you're talking about newsgroup messages, the reason you can't delete them is because they're not on your computer in the first place. OE downloads headers first and the body of the message only when you open or preview it . . . at least that's the way mine works. My view is normally set for "hide read messages" which means I only see the unread ones when I select a group. I an mark them as read any time, but they don't dissapear until I log off that particular group.
If you're talking about messages to you, then I don't know why your delete key doesn't work. Mine works fine.

Interesting, I just selected a post and hit the delete key. It popped up with a message box asking if I wanted to permanently delete the message. I said yes and the post disappeared. BTW, I'm using OE 6.

It gives me a file not found message... that's okay though, I found the translation anyway...

No... but FWIW, my ISP is now giving me problems with Google and email. I think the net is rampant with the latest virus attacks and I'm not sure things will calm down any time soon.

If you have set up users on the machine, and move from your profile to another and/or the original settings, OE will drop the news groups.
I experienced this three years ago and reported it to MS, which said, "Thanks for the bug of the week."
I no longer set users with different profiles.
Hope this helps, Lee.

I don't seem to have but one user set up at the moment. Surprising, since I thought I had at least two. It's possible you're on the right track.

When that user logged off and OE was opened with the original settings, the newsgroups were lost for the user who logged off.
This occurred only when OE was used on the original screen. When I set us both up as users and we logged on and off to each profile the loss did not occur. Only when OE was opened on the original screen, (not a logged user, just above the shut down on the start key) did the loss occur.
I hope that made sense.

Everything looked just the same except that rec.scuba kept showing no new messages. Well, that was highly unlikely. I had to unsubscribe and resubscribe twice that week. No problems since.

Lee lost his subscription to all groups. As if it was his first set-up, including the list of available groups.
I believe.

In my case, all 4 of the groups I subscribe to dropped off the folders list and when I clicked on the server, I found that my list of groups had been deleted as well.
