Okay, I'm gonna take a week off come August and I'm gonna go diving in the
Keys with a friend (we're both damn well due for a vacation). I haven't been
down in awhile, so what are the good dives these days. We're gonna drive
down through from Ft. Lauderdale to Key West so we can hit the best stops
along the way.
So the question is, which dive sites are the "gotta do", and who do we go
with to get there. No dive is too advanced, she and I are both quite
proficient divers, I'd like to see the best of the wrecks and reefs.
Thanks

 Hi Henning!!

Jim and Ric are both Rec.scubans, and will fix you up right.

Ric can get you to the Speigel Grove, and Jim does the Adolphus Busch and
Looe Key.

Jim's is also a short drive from Key West, for the party!

Welcome back, how the hell are you? :-)

Hey Popeye! Doin pretty fine, hows about yourself. I was through your area a
good while back, and I think I stopped by your place, but you weren't home.
You're on that little road that jogs off to the right and then parallels the
paved road then at the top of the hill on the left correct? If so, you
should run that bloody lawn tractor with a remote control, sheesh. Oh well,
Livin down in Ft. Lauderdale now playin with the yachts, got an owner flying
me to NYC this weekend to do an evening dinner charter and a friend is flyin
in from Europe to meet me there then come stay awhile When we get back down
here, it's time for a weeks dive vacation.
P.S. Miss your fruit juice. =;)

Dove the Duane and it is always an awesome dive.  Lots of barracuda and
large angel fish.  Followed a divemaster through the wreck's galley once.
This is not the easiest dive when there is a current though.  Once, out of 8
divers who attempted the Duane, 5 had aborted because of the strong current.
IN cases like this, you need to have a boat that has a line that connects
right to the decent line of the wreck.  As soon as you jump into the water,
you have to get to the line and work your way to the front of the boat.  Due
to the depth of this dive, it is not a very long dive but still worth every
minute.

For lots of fishlife, you can't beat Molasses reef.  A shallow dive that's
great for the 2nd or 3rd dive of the day.

Looe Key out further west is a great spot for snorkellers.  Key West dive
spots were okay but not as good as those off Key Largo.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Duane last week.

Lots of penetration opportunities.  Most ops will give you grief about deco
however (due to time constraints more than anything else) if you are on a
"shared" trip.  If you have your own boat this is a non-issue of course, or
if you charter an entire boat.

I was less impressed with the Grove.  Its one of those "must dos" if you
haven't before, but the day we visited the current was SCREAMING across the
deck and the way it was coming at the wreck there was no place you could
hide from it.

Without a scooter, this made the dive a lot less fun than it would have
otherwise been.
