Hello,

I'm quite new to diving and this list. I'm beginning a PADI open water class in
a few weeks. But I was recently in turks and caicos and tried to dive with an
instructor, but they told me I had to be certified by a dive doctor since I had
ear problems as a child and I sitll have problems with equalization in planes
and such.

So my question is, if I have problems with equalization, can that translate
into something dangerous underwater, and also, does anyone know of a dive
doctor in the NJ/NYC area whom I could go to in order to be "checked out"?

Thanks a bunch!

If you have a problem equalizing in a plane, you may have real problems
in the water. Just a 6' descent in water is roughly equal to the
pressure change in a plane.

There are techniques that help, such as descending feet first and a
bunch of different methods (and drugs) to get yer eustachian tubes to open.

Any ear doc can figure out where the problem is and recommend ways
around it.

You can try DAN, Divers Alert Network. Here are some of the listings
that I got from doing a search on their site.

Local results for ear doctor near NY, NY
Arick Daniel -  150 Broadway, New York - (212) 608-0700
Ear Nose & Throat Assoc -  150 Broadway, New York - (212) 619-6421
Cheng Andrew T  110 Lafayette St, New York - (212) 925-3569

I would most definatly get checked out. Your hearing is much to precious
to lose. Explain to them your problem and make sure that they understand
diving.
Hope this helps...

You can contact Dr. Jerry Huo in Flushing, NY. 718-670-0006. He's a
diver and a competent ENT. He's helped me clear up occasional ear
infections and congestion which would have otherwise kept me from diving.

Bart F.

PS. I think that most if not all certification agencies require a dive
medical clearance exam, so don't feel that you are being singled out.

All the ones I have experience with have a two phase process.  Fill
out a simple form.  If you say YES to any of the questions, you need a
Dr's sign off.
