I will be traveling to Miami Beach in mid-August and will be staying at
a hotel on Collins Ave. Does anyone know if there is any decent scuba
diving within a few (5) miles of that area?
Any comments will be appreciated.

The short answer is yes. The more complex one is that the proximity of
diving operators and the convenience of trips to the dive sites depends on
your location. Collins Ave runs the length of the beach. There is an inlet
at approximately 163rd street, numbers will be in the 16300 range, and
another at about 21street, numbers around 2100. If your lodging is close to
either, you're in luck. If not, you're still not out of luck, but you are
likely to spend more time traveling to and from the boats.
There are both reefs and wrecks off of Miami Beach. It's been a long time
since I visited reefs in that area. There are too many that are a lot more
convenient. There are tons of wrecks around there, everything from ships to
airplanes, to military tanks, all diver clean and deliberately sunk.

I usually dive with South Beach Divers. They do local trips, as well as day
trips to Key Largo.

If you are going to be in the Miami Beach area, I really feel that you
should drive the 30 minutes or so and get down to Key Largo for diving. I
don't think there is any dive site in Miami that will be anything close to
what you will get in Key Largo. Key Largo is in a protected marine park so
the marine life down there will be amazing.
This suggestion is even stronger if you came from out of the state or
country. Miami is so close to one of the best, if not the best dive areas
in the US. The prices for dives are not that much different than along the
Florida gold coast so I would definitely head down to the keys for the best
diving in the area.
