Hi,
Sometimes, the pain may not be due to the 'tooth' per-se. This can
be a sinus problem. Sinus problems (bone space near the cheek) can
sometimes cause severe sharp pain which APPEARS /feel-like a
tooth-ache. I once develop such a symptom b4. Visited a couple of
dentists but all said that my 'teeth' are in great order but I was
having a terrible tooth-ache.  They sent me to a GP to check for sinus,
took an x-ray and it turned out that the sinus had an infection.
regards,
-Joseph

Hi Joseph.  I've had a similar experience.  I made an urgent appt with
my dentist because of tooth pain and I was certain that I lost a
filling.  Turned out that the tooth that hurt me didn't even have a
filling and was fine. (I've been fortunate to not have had a cavity
until I was well into my late 20's so I have very few fillings.)  They
did x-rays and it showed that the tooth had a long root that extended
into the sinus cavity.  I didn't have a sinus infection but the root
was reacting to other things. I was instructed to brush with a
'sensitive teeth toothpaste' and to keep an eye out for a sinus
infection.  No sinus infection developed and the pain went away after
a few weeks.
