Hello All,
I am planning a trip to Key West and I'm looking for some advice on what
dive shop to hook up with..
Did anyone have a "good" experience out of Key West? ...other than the
drinking and nudity :)

I can't speak for the nudity and drinking part of this, but....
Everything I've heard is that Key West isn't the place to dive. Seek out
Capt. Jim Wyatt in Cudjoe Key (21 miles from Key West). It's worth the trip.

Boy, are you in for a surprize! Key West has gone family, dude. The only
nudity is diapers being changed and the bars are dead after 10 pm.
There is some good diving around Key West, but good operators that will
take ya there are few and far between. Better to go up the road to see
Wyatt - never dove him myself, but folks I respect say good things.

man! guess I'll just have to go for the diving then :)
I lived there in the mid 80's and it was wide open fun.
...up the road it is then.
Thanks Mike

Hi,
I just got back from KW in April and did my PADI AOW with Southpoint Divers
www.southpointdivers.com . They were a great shop to dive with. Their shop
is at
Duval and Truman Ave. and their boat leaves out of the Hyatt off Front St.
They do
a wreck and reef in the morning and reef and reef in the afternoon. There
were only
about 5-8 divers each morning we went out and they were very safety
conscience
(each diver had to personally initial the log when they got back on board).
With that
said, just be aware that Key West is on the edge of a big sand bar so if the
winds get
up (as they were when I was there) the vis drops dramatically, it started at
around
15' the first day the winds were up and had settled down to around 40' in a
couple
days. The Cayman Salvor is a good deep wreck that they dive on and the
finger
reefs are in the protected areas so you can see some really big caribbean
lobsters
if you check out the holes in the reef. I've dove up the keys (looe key
divers about
20 miles up is a good dive shop and reef) but I like the ideal that I can
dive in the
morning, then 'walk' back to the hotel without having to drive back ruining
my
relaxation I got from being underwater. BTW, if you go with Southpoint tell
Jeff the
dive instructor that Randy from Vermont says Hi!
R
P.S. I had issues with the Captain's Corner Dive Shop in KW. I went on a
dive with
them and the conditions were so bad that even the dive master on board lost
his way
underwater yet they insisted on continuing to dive (3 divers were novices
just getting
their open water check out dives). I refused to dive and when I got back to
the
dock, the manager of the shop just shucked off my concerns (Not a good thing
in my
book. I dive murky water all the time but know what my limits are and it's
better to walk
away from bad conditions than not walk away at all!).
