works for me.

this medication regimen)YMMV
Seriously, if it is an allergy, it'll probably clear up after you get to
coz.

Why not ask your doc? Steroids have always worked for me, but I don't
have allergies, so these problems were always caused by something
stupid I did while diving or something I didn't do afterwards.

Lots of HOT tea. Also read http://www.ent-consult.com/ears.html#et_blockage,
its specific for Serous Otitis Media, but the same advice will help in this
situation.
Second choice is to send me the tickets, I will make sure I do not enjoy
myself.
Good luck !!

Joe,
I have always had trouble clearing my right ear, colds & allergies
notwithstanding. The best thing I have found is 12hr Contact Allergy
Cold and sinus caplets.
Good luck. Hope you do find something to get you cleared up enough to dive.

It is likely to be the case that once you get to Coz, it will clear up
on it's own.
I went out and got one of those ionic air purifiers a few weeks back,
and I keep it in my bedroom. To me it makes a huge difference.

My allergies took off about a month and a half ago. I took Allegra also but
it didn't work for the full day for 3 weeks. It would only last about 5-6
hours before I had to take some Claritin. Went back to the Doc for some
Flonase. That gave me compelte relief. Now I don't use the FLonase any
more. The Allegra seems to be working fully now. Allegra can be slow to
take full affect but once it is goign it works pretty good.
Try to get some Flonase. Should make the difference.

Joe, as already stated, get some Flonase, Nasonex, Nasalcort AQ or similar
nasal steroid. The usual dose is 2 sprays in each nostril once a day but it
will not hurt you to do it twice a day for short term. Keep taking the
Allegra 180mg once a day. Sudafed may help, but there is some debate in the
ENT literature. Best of luck.

Thanks all - the Allegra, and Sudafed seems to be helping - I was able
to clear my ears yesterday and today. I also broke down and turned on
the AC - at least for this week. It still gets cool at night - but
thought closing everything up my help clear the allergens from the house.
I haven't had much luck with Flonase.

Joe, don't give up on the Flonase - it takes up to 3 weeks for it to reach
maximal effect, but then again, if you're on the mend I'd bag it.

I've heard some concerns expressed over the effect these meds might
have on the off-gassing process within the body. Anyone know anything
specific about that?

There are distinct psychological and physical issues with long term
use of Sudafed. Besides the problems with it possibly resulting in a
reverse squeeze or eustacion tube blockage and resultant ear problems.
As with most medications, there is little/no research on their effects
outside of "normal" life. DAN has done some studies (more like
survies) of Sudafed, and I believe that's where I got the above
information. My doc recommends not using it for more than 4 days, due
to cardiovascular issues. Cardiac arrythmia is not a nice thing to
have anywhere, never mind at 90 ft.
I still think his best answer is to talk to someone who knows what
they are talking about. My medical opinions are worth about what he
pays for them.

They mentioned it in the enriched air class I just took. But the
concern was mostly with the overall effects of the body and diving.

I've never heard of any offgassing concerns. The concerns I've read
have been with the vasoconstriction effects of Sudafed and other
systemic decongestants (including Flonase).
While generally considered safe for diving, the concern centers around
increased susceptibility to O2 tox. Perhaps not an issue on air until
you get below 130, but certainly an issue with nitrox.
They also cause an increase in heart rate, which will lead to
increased gas consumption... somewhat mitigated by the environment in
Coz.
The concerns over non-systemic nasal sprays, other than pure saline,
is in the rebound effect. Afrin in particular is quite effective, and
also QUITE "addictive". Do a Google for Afrin addiction and read some
real horror stories.

Snip
Flonase is a nasal steroid, not a decongestant per se, although it may have
some of those effects.
