from cruise ships.

I'm sure they think the dives are amazing. Now ask the non-newbies.

You don't take a cruise to go to dive destinations.  While
diving can be a very nice diversion from normal cruise
activities (tours, shopping, eating, etc.), you shouldn't
expect it to be the highlight of the trip.

Most ships hire their own guides for their dive excursions
and take people to safe and easy dive spots. If you have any
heads up on what time you are going to get to and leave a
particular place, it is better for you to pre-arrange with a
good operator that will take you and your party to the
better spots. It will probably save you some money, too!

No, you take a cruise for the fun of cruising.  You take a
dive trip to dive!

Just my $.02.  Enjoy your trip.

i am embarking on scuba certification because i have enjoyed snorkling so
much on my cruise vacations.  Is an excusion a cruise ship not worth taking
these classes.

Learn to dive for the sake of learning to dive.  My dive off Carnival
in Coz was good, but nothing to write home about.  Wish we'd booked
with somebody else, but we didn't know how it all worked (first
cruise).  Some locations, such as GC, it's probably safest to book the
excursion since you're limited on time.  From what I've heard,
however, those are cattleboats.

In GC, walk south from the cruise dock down to Eden Rock w/ your gear.
$10 shore dive that is better than the excursion dive.

It can get really crowded at Eden Rock.  Jump in a cab and go to the Turtle
Farm and have a great shore dive there! Tour the farm and have lunch above
the dive shop.  It will all be cheaper than the excursion dive ... and you
might get lucky and have the ocean to yourself

Not to me, but I am not the one contemplating this.  It's your money
and your leisure time.

Another approach you might like is to learn to dive either at home, or
at a dive resort and forget the cruise bit.

Oh ... by all means!  Take the scuba classes and discover
the wonder and beauties that the rest of us have found!  I
am just saying that cruise ship diving excursions are quite
often over crowded cattle boats that get the most amount of
people to the closest reefs in the shortest amount of time.
I'd hate for that to be your first taste of tropical diving!

Take the classes and then book an independent charter on
your own.  We did that a few years ago on a family reunion
cruise.  While the ship had "packages" available, we booked
ahead with a known operator and had two spectacular dives
(versus one with the ship tour), lunch and a small,
uncrowded boat!  Plus, we saved about $30 each person!

Why not?

Because cruise ship diving is generally a cattle boat to
close by and over crowded shallow reefs.  The divers can get
rushed in and out of the water and really don't get their
money's worth.

It is better to book independently with a quality operator.

But the diving could still be the highlight of the cruise.

Can be high priced.  Rush you thru the dives - can be cattle boats.  But
they make sure the cruise ship doesn't leave without you.  If you are
familiar with the area and can book your own with a dive shop you trust
can turn out to be a better deal.  Make sure you are straight with the
difference in ship time and local time!

I did my very first Discover Scuba dive at Koki Beach, St. Thomas while
on a cruise - it was a ship excursion. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it
prompted me to get certified (back home).

However, if I was on another cruise (I wish), I would probably go with a
local dive shop at the destination rather than the ship's excursion.
If organized properly, I should get better diving.

But I wonder about the potential for financial disaster - ie. What
happens if, for some reason, the LDS charter is delayed and I miss my
ship? OUCH! The charter won't pay for my travel expense to catch up with
the ship, nor will the ship. I have never gotten back to the dock late
yet on any charter that I've been on while diving, but boats do break
down, divers get lost or injured, and Captain Murphy's Law is still in
effect.

I'm a new diver and I did my first ocean dives in the Carribean as an
excursion from a Royal Carrieban cruise ship.

First I did Cozumel....was ok, not too crowded. Nice dive, small boat
though. 2 tank dive was reasonably priced.

Second I did Roatan. We went out of Anthonys Key Resort, again booked
through the cruise ship. Very nice boat, nice dive. Not overcrowded at
all. Everyone on the dive was very pleased.

Maybe I just got lucky that there were not many divers on the ship.
This was in mid January, so that probably had something to do with it.

I got my money back on the Grand Cayman Stingray City excusion
through the cruise ship though....the worst cattleing of people I ever
saw and our bus didn't even show up for a long time....I opted out at
that point.  So, I think it's a matter of luck with the cruise ship
excursions.
