My family and I are planning to visit Kona in early May.

I am the only diver in the family.  I'd very much like to do some shore
diving while I'm there -- does anyone know how I might go about finding
a buddy over there?  Or should I just plan to keep it above 40 feet and
dive solo?

Another possibility would be a guided dive in a group, but I'm not eager
to have my bottom time gated by heavy breathers who don't dive much.

While I'm at it, some equipment questions:  I normally dive in Monterey,
wearing a 7 mm one piece wet suit with an integrated hood.  Will this be
too warm for Kona?  I suspect yes, but I'm not 100% sure because I know
that folks dive there in May in 5 mm two pieces, which makes for 10 mm
at the core.

Can anyone familiar with Kona diving recommend a shop that rents larger
steel tanks (95 and up) with Nitrox fills?

Thanks!

Eric

You've picked a great place to dive. Kona is well known for it's Manta Ray
dives. I went last October and saw 19 Manta Rays on one dive! It just
doesn't get any better. If your interested try Jack's Diving Locker. They
were really cool and do supply nitrox. I'm not sure about the large tanks
though. I was using a 80 cubic foot tank and got 78 minutes off of it. We
were only about 40 feet down.
I wear a 3mm full suit with a 3mm vest or sometimes a 5/4mm. Anything more
would be too warm.
I wish I could help you about shore diving, but I've not done any there (I
live on Oahu). Enjoy your trip.
