Check out this new "toy" by oceanic

http://www.oceanicworldwide.com/2004/p_computers_iddm.html

Who needs wrist or console mount computers anymore... my only questions are
1.) Where does the battery go and 2.) does it come in an "hoseless, air
integrated" model... :-)

The location of the battery is detailed in the article.

The battery goes under the other eye.

The other side of the mask.

The model you posted to *is* the hoseless AI model.

"The IDDM contains a miniature liquid crystal display (LCD) panel,
multi-element optics, microprocessor, depth transducer, _wireless_
cylinder_pressure_receiver_, diver replaceable battery, and controlling
software - all built directly into a dive mask." (emphasis mine)

My question is, "How effective are the optics at dealing with fogging
and water sloshing around in the mask?"  They claim it's "...viewable
regardless of environmental conditions."  Would kinda suck if you had
to call a dive because your computer fogged up.

I've had one dive where a hood interfered with properly sealing the
mask (needed trimming) and I just switched to breathing out through my
nose to keep the mask from ever really filling up (but there was water
sloshing around through the whole dive).  I can't count the number of
times I've helped female divers remove hair from their mask seal to
stop water from getting into their mask.

Also, if the fact that you spent $400-$1000 on your mask doesn't keep
it on your face or around your neck when in the water and safely put
away at all other times, not much will.

Regards,
Ross

I thought that cochran had that ready to go years ago?
any minute now.
could they have failed, and been beaten by oceanic?

hehehe.

Is it really a HUD or just a minature display at the bottom of the goggles?
From the pictures it looks like it is just a mini gauge. I thought a proper
HUD will project the image on the face of the lense - just like helmet
visors or windshields. I don't know about you, but I can't focus my vision
that close to my eyelooks like it will be 1/2" away from my eyeball. I guess
it would compound the problem if you are far sighted or wear bifocals.

Lord help you if some one knocks your mask off with a fin kick or something.

Nice idea though if it can project like a true HUD onto the goggle lense.

It probably has a diopter correction lens of the front of the display.

I wonder if firing a camera strobe will still interrupt the data stream from the tank.

The optics will almost certainly allow you to focus at a reasonable
distance.  Most of the wearable video displays allow you to focus on
the image at an apparent 30"-60" distance, I'd be suprised if this one
was any different.
