Anyone Dive in Marsh Creek State Park?

I seem to recall seeing  a subject line run through here once about
diving in Marsh Creek State Park.

Anyone have this experience?
If so, how was  your experience?

Hi there Ratfish :)  I can't say that I recall anyone posting about
diving in Marsh Creek but I might have missed it. I do know that you
need to obtain special permission before diving there... IOW, you
can't just show up with your gear and dive in. I have several friends
who are police / park rangers with the state (as Pops loves to tease
me about) and so I know that diving is permitting there but you need
to contact the park officials for written permission first. Diving is
also permitted with permission at French Creek, which is near
Marsh...and at Nockamixon....and I think also at Locust Lakes but I'm
not sure about that one.

Now... questions I have about diving these areas are two-fold. One
question is just what will you see. The second question is how safe is
it. I used to own a windsurf board and I surfed Nockamixon. In the
warmer summer months, there was always an algae bloom.  There was also
this long stem plant life that seemed like a minature version of the
kelp forests in Calif. This stuff grew from the bottom to the surface
and the area that I was in was from 5 to 50 ft deep. I don't think I'd
want to dive in that plant stuff. The safety issue comes to my mind
because there aren't many divers going to these areas and so the
boaters probably do not have a clue what to do if they see a dive flag
being towed by a diver under the surface. Yes, you as the diver could
probably hear a motor boat coming your way. But you won't hear a 25 ft
sailboat or a windsurfer. If I were going to dive at these areas, I'd
probably want to dive far out of the way of the boaters. :)  Just my
opinion of course. If I can help answer any questions that you might
have re: the police regs for these areas, please let me know. The head
of French Creek is the best friend of my friend's hub...and so I could
have put in a 'good word' for you... however he is retiring the end of
this month. LOL  :)

Babette,

Thank you for a well considered list of cautionarys.
I'd thought of the possibility for receiving a really bad headache
from a wind surfer (that of course is an understatement).  Hadn't
considered the grass/weed issue though.  You're right, there is a
healthy forest out there.  I had checked the park rules.  Have to make
it known that you are diving, seems they don't restrict, unless you
are short sighted and surprise them.  Then they surprise you.  And it
seems they object to you getting closer than 300 to the damn.  :-)

What to see?
Nostalgia perhaps, and fishes of course.
I remember it as a valley, roads and a few houses.
On old topographic maps you can find the roads and in person the
crumbled reminders lead into the water replete with rotted stumps from
road side trees (once upon a time).
I know they leveled the buildings, and if the shore is an indicator
the foundations are still there.  Besides, there is the most human
reason of all, because it is there  :-)

Thank you for your input, I will seriously have to consider how much I
will let curiosity rule the day.  Of course if I was a cat I'd died of
curiosity poisoning long ago.

The damn at Nock is, I think, the deepest point. I might be wrong
though. I believe it's about 90 ft there. My ex had a boat with a
'fish-finder' on it and just before the damn seemed deepest.  And it
seemed to have the most fish.  <grin>  The fishermen swear that the
'walleyes' are good catchin there.

I don't think that they leveled all the buildings and the
'fish-finder' gave some strange topo that had to be buildings.

LOL  I hear ya. I enjoy your curiousity and I've thought the same but
the temp of the lake in the winter / clear water months and the algea
bloom ofthe summer months has thus far prevented me from exploring it.
:)

Hmmm, any recollection of the general where abouts of those odd topo
readings?  I see more research in my future, old maps, hmmm sounds
like fun.

I don't recall off the top of my head and I can't dig the maps out
just now cause they are in the attic somewhere.  But I'm sure that if
you went to the courthouse in Doylestown, you could find info.  Or the
park rangers might beable to tell you too.
