I'll be in Maui next weeek, and will have my referral dive done early in the
week. Any suggestions for a good boat dive that is appropriate for a novice?

Thanks,

Michael

Lahina divers. They specialize in newbies.

Once you get some experience, Ed Robinson or Mike Severns.

Yup, they have Japanese newbies bobbing to the surface like buoys, sans
weight belts which dropped off.  This is one of the worst operations in
Hawaii IMNSFHO.

I agree completely. I remember a french DM who insisted on leading
everybody around by the nose, tapping his tank all the time with his
little baton. The guy would actually pull divers along to get them to
"behave." They have nitrox, but won't let you use it for any dives not
over a hard bottom. I guess they assume everyone is as bad as their
graduates and can't be trusted to stay above MOD.

I make it a point to "promote" Lahaina divers every time I get the
chance <eg>

At the opposite end of the spectrum is Ed Robinson and Mike Severns.
The only issue with them is that they don't take anyone with less than
25 dives, which leaves out the OP.

So why did you recommend it?

I recommended it in a way I thought was insulting enough that people
would avoid them. I may have been a bit too subtle.

Too subtle for me.  I thought it was an actual suggestion.

Here it is again, judge for yourself.  Try to look at it from Michael
182's perspective, someone who is not yet certified, probably knows
little if nothing about good or bad dive ops, and asked a legitimate
question.

I see your point.

LOL.  Sounds like the guy we had last time we dove with them.  His only
interest seemed to be in getting you to burn your tank as quickly as
possible.  Boy did we frustrate him.  ;^)

Otherwise, of five trips with Lahina Divers that was the only negative
experience.  Yes, the are a cattle boat operation but since we usually stay
in or around Lahina when on Maui, they are convenient.  And the DMs do a
pretty good job of separating the divers into groups of like abilities.

I prefer Ed Robinson but they are out of Kihei and the drive from Lahina to
Kihie can be a bitch anytime of the day.  If you've got kids, it'll add at
least one more hour to the babysitter's fee.

There's great shore diving here on Maui... it's (practically) free if you do
it on your own! If you want guided shore dives, check out
www.mauidreamsdiveco.com - "shore diving specialists". They have no boat,
but they're a good shop otherwise.
