I dove in Ocho Rios, in January.  I brought gear along.  The diving
was mediocre, as much of the reef is damaged.  Visibility was great &
the water was warm.  Where would you be staying?

Tell us how it was when you're back ...we're going in July to Negril.

You'll love it.  I was there last August and had an excellent time.  I went
in July 3 years ago and had an even better time than in August last year.

Someone already told me about a good spot for night diving, not far from
a great local bar (where you can admire the beautiful sunset).

So, I gather it's worthwhile to take my gear?

We've booked an all-in...just wondering if they local herbs are also
included... >:-)

Gear rentals and air are free.  I don't believe they allow shore diving, so
that's not an issue.  I'd probably not take my gear again as it's really too
much of a PITA to deal with the gear at the resort when the rentals are
free.  OTOH, if you are very fond of your style of gear, it might be
worthwhile to you.  The gear they supply is fairly standard stuff.  Most of
it, IIRC, is Scubapro.  Jacket style BCs and manual guages.  I enjoyed the
dive I went on last summer and the 3 or 4 I did 3 years ago, but I'm
inexperienced and probably wouldn't know better anyway.  I'm at the point
where, pretty much any diving I do is good because I'm underwater looking at
"stuff".

Not included, but readily available and (FWIU) relatively inexpensive as
well.  Most people (who buy) buy once and throw the rest away when they
leave.

Better to have and not use.  The other option is to rent!

Grand Lido Negril (GLN) allows free use of their equipment and free air
fills, but as I understand it, they don't allow shore diving.  They use
Scubapro (IIRC) BCs and regs.  Their equipment isn't great, but it's not
terribly bad either.  I thoroughly enjoyed the dive (unfortunately, I only
got to do one dive) when I was there last summer, but my only comparison
locations are pools and a natural "pond" in Texas.  If you are interested in
night diving, they will accommodate you, but it isn't included (i.e.. it
costs extra).  There is a plane wreck that they dive (about 90'), but I was
unable to make those dives.

I have no experience with Grand Lido Braco, but I'd imagine the setup is
similar.

I have read that Negril has the best diving on the island and even that is
just mediocre.

If you meant to say goat, I'd leave it at home.  The Jamaicans eat goat and
will likely consume it while you're underwater.  Besides, it's merely an
old-wives' tale that having sex with a goat on a boat will allay
seasickness.  Take Dramamine with you instead.

On a boat,
On a train,
In a house,
With a mouse....

Then you'd be in Negril... actually, they are right across the street from
each other, but you won't get much (if any) carry-over from Hedo...  By the
way, there are actually 2 Hedos on the Island.  Hedo 2 and Hedo 3 (yes, that
is supposed to be a 2 and 3).  I'm not sure what happened to Hedo 1 or if
there ever was a Hedo 1...  From what I understand, Hedo 2 is exceptionally
sexual and can be very disgusting.  There was a couple on their Honeymoon
last summer at Negril who had just come over after a week @ Hedo and they
said that people are constantly coming up and asking if you'd like to have
sex...  These people supposedly aren't real persistent (or pushy), there's
just a lot of them.

For all the "real" information you could possibly want on Hedo go to
www.dennyp.com

I've been to GLSS twice ( no longer a superclubs property ),  Hedo II once ,
and Starfish once and dove them all.   OW and AOW was at GLSS,  diving at
Hedo II sucked, and I had a wonderful time diving at Starfish.   Gear is
always included with the cost of the boat, so only bring what you must
bring.  For me thats typically mask, wetsuit and fins.     Most shops in
Jamaica use Sherwood BCs and Sherwood Brut Regulators.   More then fine for
the diving you'll be doing.

Negril is the lee side of the island with lots of drift diving.  You should
have fun.  You'll probably only dive once, maybe twice a day if you beg.  At
starfish diving was extra ( and fairly cheap ) so they were much more
accomodating on diving as much as you want.

I stayed at and went scuba diving thru "Couples" resort in Jamaica in
1980 or 81. It was very nice and good diving. But, that doesn't help
you now that you're asking over 20 yrs later.  :)
