Hey..
Anyone know why diver's way in Bayshore is closing?? Is Bob finally going to Fl
full time?
TonyP - 05 Mar 2004 14:55 GMT
I would guess because they don't offer nitrox? I don't know. Dive shops
here on LI are survivors. I find that most people in the area (I dive
out of freeport, live in N. Babylon... about 10 mins from DW) just don't
want to dive here. They go to the Caribbean or the Keys, or the dive
trips to the warmer places that dive shops book. The place is big,
property taxes are high, and I guess, there just isn't enough flow of
business to make it worth staying.

Then why would offering nitrox make a difference (or were you trying to
be sarcastic?).

A little sarcasm. But, pumping only air on LI while others are doing
nitrox and mix leaves something lacking in a shop. I stopped by their
when I first moved to LI. The people there were very friendly, but, I
dive nitrox and love the shop where I have my stuff serviced and tanks
filled. The rest of my post is speculation on my part. The fact is,
there aren't many divers here in NY/LI that actually dive here. Most
head to warmer and clearer water. You are not going to be selling many
tanks or equipment that would be required to dive here in the North
East. It's a tough market. In it's 'heyday', it was not uncommon for
dive boats to have 30 divers, and the boats doing Wed, Sat, and Sun
trips. Now, most just do Sundays, and not to the capacity of by-gone
days. It's costly, more gear intensive, colder and darker than what most
people want.

TonyP left this mess on Fri, 05 Mar 2004 21:13:24 GMT for The Way to clean up:

Which is really curious, when you think about how the waters around New York are
cleaner than they've been in decades.

I love Caribbean diving, but most of my diving is done up here in the city's
waters, including Jersey and Long Island.

I wonder, do you think cheap airfares and discounts and internet deals might
have had some impact on this?
