Thanks :-)

Get an Apex, and be done with it.

Apparently my sig-other can't get a straight answer from the shops - either one (who carries the Mares line) says it's great... or another (who doesn't carry the line) says it's crap. He wanted to know from consumers. I'll be back in the fall, so if I want do do some diving close to home I'll need one too, or we trade off?

For that money you can get an Apeks and they'll most certainly do the job (guess what I'm diving with...).

Being right is definitely habit forming. Maintenance takes higher and higher doses.

Well, that was just the site with the most consise listing of specs. The price seems to be somewhere around 400 dollars...

Which is why I'm asking for the advice here :-) I don't know the SCUBA stuff like he does (still not lots) and he says I'm more net-savvy than him, hence I got the job of posting the question since so many here DO know TONS ;-)
Apparently the opinions on equiptment usually don't vary so so much from shop to shop... but the difference was so great this time, he felt a bit at a loss and since it's a relatively new product, there aren't many reviews or product reports on it yet.

Well, to be honest, I have no idea what it's like. If you did get it, I doubt you'd have any problems with it, that goes for most regs out there though...
As others have said, Apeks are very good. I use them and love them. (DS4 1st stage with TX50 primary 2nd stage on a 7ft longhose and a necklaced ATX40 backup on a shorthose.)
It depends on what sort of diving you want to be doing... If you only ever plan to be doing warm, shallow recreational diving, you could get away with just about anything. If you think you might one day get into technical diving, you'll most likely want high performing regs, ones that can be converted to DIN (assuming you're buying yoke regs), ones that allow good hose routing for use in twinsits, ones that are environmentally sealed for use in very cold water, etc...

Or are you just in shock at the new improved and sociably viable Jammer?

Nee, geen gekheid, ik duik er nu anderhalf jaar mee en ik ben zéér tevreden.

And I am not particular amused about their sell policy, swapping design every some months and call this a newly developped reg...
Are selling a first stage ( Ruby), and advise their dealer, to replace the ruby at the next service with the ordinary steel ball. That is take the money, and don't even run, but rely on the stupidity of your customers.

Non?
A vôtre service.

Well, considering that you're replying to my post with the typo, and there's very little in consumer reports (apparently) thus far as it is relatively new, can I get a cite for that?
Rock The Diver - 05 Mar 2004 20:46 GMT > I'd like to know if someone has any experience with and/knows if there > are any reviews about the Amres Proton Ice Regulator. > > Thanks :-) > > L. I'm told that most of the gear from major manufacturers is good quality and reliable. I tried the Proton Ice last year when it was offered for trial. It's heavier than some second stages. Supposedly that's to retain heat and keep the regulator from freezing. Mostly, it seemed really well made. Rocky
