Thinking of buying a Canon S500. It is a 5 MP compact camera that Canon
makes an inexpensive housing for. I am leaning towards this camera because
of the housing and thought of using it underwater. Is this type of
arrangement one that will produce decent underwater shots?

Decent yes, but limited in some ways, and the autofocus is a bit slow for
moving objects. The A80 might be a better compromise for small but useful.
My pics from Miami and Belize are the first two trips I had the S400 - not
too shabby for no flash and limited diving experience with it.

David,
not an unreasonable suggestion. Ideally need an external light source ( I
prefer a strobe) to get decent shots. I use the S45 ( 4 mp) but I see no
reason the S500 would be a problem. Results and comments are on my camera
page.
