Okay, after the last debate I started, I hesitate to ask this, but what the
hell. After extensive pooldives with an extensive array of BC's, some
previously mentioned here, I'v decided to purchase the IDI Advantage. The
dive shop I usually buy from has it with cummerbund extender for $450.00.
After looking online, I've found it for as low as $289.00
(www.jodiveramerica.com anybody got any bad input about that site?) Only
problem, no knowledge of that p[articualr online shop, and it doesn't come
with a cummerbund extender.
So what I need to know is, where can i get a cummerbund extender for it.
Don't want to go to my local dive shop owner, as I do alot of business with
him, and I do NOT want to admit to him I bought a peice of gear from an
online
competitor, but that I still want to buy a cheaper peice of equipment from
him. It also complicates mattters in that he helped me with the test dives,
as well as the selection of the IDI BC. He's cut me solid deals before, but
this kind of markup is a bit much.
And I really would hate to alienate him.
Any ideas, links?

Tao,
Tell him how much you can buy it online for and see if he will compromise.
Unfortunately, besides the usual not supporting your LDS line of reasoning,
you won't usually get any warranty service from the original manufacturer by
buying stuff over the web. US Divers and ScubaPro both have non internet
sale policies. Unfortunately, you can still get their equipment online.

And the only people that care about this are the same people that buy
into that 'lifetime warranty' crap. Not I.

I care because the parts are free on my annual servicing. So hmm, that
seems to be a 50% savings and if there is a problem with it they will fix
it.
What would be your point about the "lifetime warranty crap?"

As I've understood the ScubaPro warranty, one is required to purchase
from an authorised SP dealer to access the SP lifetime warranty. This
warranty offers free parts on every annual service interval until the
diver kills him/herself. OTOH, if one doesn't purchase from an
authorized SP dealer, the free parts are not offered, regardless of the
service intervals, annual or not. Either way, the purchaser pays for
the labour related to the service event.
David, I have my SP regs serviced by a competent LDS tech, and I pay for
parts every time (semi-annually), about $5/reg. I own three SP regs
which I purchased new in the box, none qualify for the SP lifetime
warranty of free parts because I didn't purchase from an authorised
dealer. I saved a ton of money by doing so, yet knowing full well the
effect my decision had on the warranty coverage. Yes, these regs were
(are) grey-market goods. My initial purchase savings will buy a ton of
'free' parts over my lifetime, and yours.
As a consumer, I neither believe SP's method of price control is
reasonable nor even legal. As a consumer I have choices and I make them
according to my priorities, not yours, not ScubaPro's.

1. Bullshit. Depends on the manufacturer and how far you're willing to go
to push the issue.
2. Who wants equipment that needs warranty service anyway?

Step one: Decide how much extra would you be willing to pay to buy the BC
from him? Don't forget that you need to include the price of shipping in
your calculations.
Step two, print out the page from JoeDiverAmerica and take it into the store
(don't forget to include the shipping price)
Step three: explain that you don't expect him to be able to match the price,
but see if he can at least give you the price you decided on in Step One.
Step four: Decide if the deal he offers is worth keeping him as a vendor.
He may not be able to come down much in price, but he may be willing to cut
you some deals on some other stuff (or throw in some freebies).

Eh Tao
I too have a rather robust beltline, I prefer to believe that you wouldn't
keep a million dollar tool without building a shed over it.
I've been looking for a LDS that will let me try several BCs like you did.
Where is your shop? Did you ever get your IDI & extender??? Any luck with
jodiveamerica.com?
Any input would be appreciated!
