I don't know if it is a good or bad thing that I don't see many
comments about the VR3 computer in the news group.

Is there anyone out there that can give me some advice that can help
me make up my mind between the VR3 and the HS Explorer?

My big thing between the two is aluminum -vs.- plastic (I know one
person that had to send back his Explorer do to an issue with
housing.)

They basically have the same functions, one might have more niceties
then the other, and they use different algorithms for decompression,
but going back to my early days of diving P1+P2 still equals P.

Nope, The results are quite different.. If you use the explorer in
RGBM mode the decompression times will be drastically different.. I
own two explorers and the vr3 so I can comment fairly.. on the
profiles I run, the VR3 typically has 30 minutes or more decompression
required than the explorer.. In Buhlman mode the numbers are pretty
close.. My VR3 is usually my third backup with behind my hammerhead
and hs-explorer.. Buy the HS version not the AByss version.

The "case" issue was resolved over a year ago.. Although some were
knowing selling recalled computers instead of having them corrected.
The crush depth is deeper than you'll ever dive if I remember
correctly the case was tested to 1800+fsw (the usual accepted practice
in the US of 3x rating).. each unit is tested to over 600fsw..

The case issue is a bit complex, the swap of the earliest units was
done as a precaution, the "plastic" was impregnated with a bit to much
glass and there were concerns the cases might become brittle so they
were swapped, the newer material is very resiliant, a few of the
swapped cases flooded, this was found to be the way the case
manufacturer was putting in the studs. It was decided not to use any
studs and there have been no problems..

The explorer is also much simpler to operate, there are no multiple
screens
required to go through to change mixes..  the worse youll ever do is
go 1 screen away from the normal dive screen..

I've been using a VR3 for a couple of months now and wouldn't like to have
to use the others again.  If you ever wish to get into rebreathers they can
calculate your deco's off the actual loop O2, they take any AA size battery
and can be changed in a few seconds.  and If you don't want to start using
He straight away you can buy the cheaper unit and upgrade it with a pin
number when you do wish to.

OK, I got one for the Explorer and one for the VR3.  Got a question
for Basss, How many dives do you have on the VR3?  There has been some
talk about the indigo back light losing its brightness.  Also there
was some talk about pitting of the Aluminum.

I've done about 18 dives on mine, and had no pitting on the aluminium or
problems with the backlight so far.  Also I checked with 2 other guys I dive
with that have had theirs for a bit over 12 months and other than scratches
they haven't had any problems, one with 85 dives and the other 68 dives.

Thank you Bass,

But it still looks like there is not that many people either reading
this NG that have experece with the VR3 or Exploere.  I'm still
waiting for Delta P to get back to me with local deals and to find out
about RGBM and when it can be incorperated with the VR3.  Bass by the
way how long are you deco hangs?

For VR3 users, go check out the uk.rec.scuba NG, A number of them have been
nattering about VR3s and prices.
