I sent a lot of my "tec" equipment back from a recent Florida trip back home
by UPS. UPS lost the shipment. I sent it from a UPS store that charged 3X
the rate for insurance that UPS charges so I didnt buy the insurance. They
did package the items. I guess not well enough! Seems the UPS store has
nothing to do with UPS and they can charge whatever they want. I am out a
significant amount of money now and will not be able to dive for a while.
I was wondering if anybody has lost dive gear on UPS shipments and if they
had any recourse?

Man did you pick a sore bone to pick at.
I am out about $2.5K worth of lost gear to UPS, which people paid for and I
had to not only kiss off the original, but replace it,
have had claims on file for going on two years, with no resolution, and I
will never use them again.
Absolutely do not use them going to Canada!
Sorry to hear of your troubles.

No, do not use UPS to Canada, I agree wholeheartedly, even the post office
is better.

I won't ship to Canada at all.
I've had too many things go into a black hole on their side of the border.
Several times I managed to trace a shipment to their customs office - where
it was just plain sitting.
Now its one thing if there's some kind of problem or question, but then
there's some kind of action on resolving it, right?
No - these are just instances where the government employees have just stuck
the box on a shelf and ignored it until someone screamed. Sometimes you can
shake it loose, sometimes not.
My solution is simply not to ship to Canada at all, irrespective of the
carrier.

I bought a Camera on Ebay and had it shipped through UPS to me here in
Canada... It never showed, but the seller sent me my cash back...
UPS charges astronomical fees to get something into Canada as customs
and brokerage fees and then charges to collect the taxes on top of
that.
I have had a package cost me more in fees than what the original
selling price and shipping fees combined cost me. UPS is person non
grata at this house, even if she is a nice looking lady.
I now make it a point to tell everyone I cannot accept ANY package
sent through UPS and the packages will be refused.

Same here, but due to general incompetence or UPS employee morale in the
pits.

You know, I once purchased Levis via phone order and the vendor charged me
for shipping and insurance. If he knew enough to ensure blue jeans at the
customer's expense, why didn't you know enough to do the same?

I have three claims pending, two of which are going on two years old.

Its the old "wear him down until he gets pissed off enough and will go
away" strategy. Works sometimes, sometimes it doesn't. If it works
enough times, it is worth the effort and loss of a customer.

they lost a computer of mine once. they have no customer service
to deal with issues of lost equipment. they pretty much didn't
care. I finally got my computer after 2 months. yep. it took
that long.
The UPS store, which is an offshoot of Mail Boxes ETC charges the
most overpriced rates around. They charge for the "convience" of
shipping with them. I about had a heart attack the last time
i tried to ship something with them and they told me the rate.
If I hadn't been in such a time crunch I would have definately
gone somewhere else. I don't use them anymore, but go direct
to UPS truck center which is open 4pm-6pm where i live to receive
packages. They are much better.

If you prepare and bill your shipments online you can just drop them off at
"The UPS Store" and avoid the rape of the upcharges. Just print the label
off your computer, affix it to your packaging, and drop it off.
They WILL accept them at the counter without hassle. I do it all the time.

How do you take care of weighing larger packages that are kind heavy?

Take them over to Fedex and use their scale.

Sounds like a good idea. Might as well just ship with them to!
My problem here in this small town is one UPS Store or the Pony Mailing
Center which does UPS, FEDEX and USPS. Not too many choices. Pony mailing
charges a small fee but does have 20% military discounts on Tuesdays.

I use a scale ;-)
I used a bathroom scale for a lot of stuff but as I shipped more I went and
bought a packeage scale (up to 75lbs) from the office supply store. Like,
Karl I ship from my computer and drop off at the UPS store next to the
coffee shop in town. I like the look on their face when it is all
pre-addressed and they realize they are missing out, all becasue they charge
far too much for their service.

I have a scale. Two actually. One for things up to 5lbs, and one for
larger items. It goes with the territory of sending packages.

I just use the bathroom scale. If it won't fit easily on the scale
by itself then get on it holding the package and
note your weight, then weight yourself w/o the package. subtract
the weights.
The UPS center also has a scale and will weight them before
they charge you also, so it's not really a worry.

Your bathroom scale tells you the truth? Lol!

If you do it with and then without, it'll get you close
enough for large packages. As long as you get close
to the weight of the package, then UPS doesn't seem
to care.
I used to work in a shipping department while in college.
We pretty much just "guessed" at the weight most of the
time. We never once had UPS send a package back
for incorrect weight. As long as you are close,
they don't care. It costs them more to send it back
than it does just to ship it on.

Sorry to hear about that. Fortunately I have used them (and FedEx) on a
few different occasions
with orders from here in Oz to USA and have always been informed by
receivers that goods have arrived on time.
Best of luck, hope things work out.

I believe the operative phrase is "tell it to the chaplain." You took your
chances and, this time, lost.
