Henderson wetsuits

Mick - 20 Dec 2005 07:01 GMT I'm looking to buy a couple of 5mm fullsuits for me and my wife. I've had several O'Neill surfing wetsuits over the years, and I liked them, but I can't seem to find anyone selling their diving wetsuits. I found one online place selling the '5000X' fullsuit, but it turns out they don't actually have any in stock. So, I gave up and started looking for other brands. Scuba.com has a bunch of Henderson suits. Their 'Hyperstretch' suit look nice, but I thought I'd check and see if anyone here has an opinion, good or bad.
Mervi Oikonen - 20 Dec 2005 12:16 GMT I bought a Mares Evolution Lady 5+5 mm fullsuit for 155 euros (5+5 meaning, the tight arm and leg cuffs provide the extra 5 mm) and I have been _very_ pleased with it. The cuffs work a bit like a semi-dry, limiting the water from flowing in and out. The suit kept me perfectly warm during dives in the Mediterranean in July at +17-20C and the Red Sea in November at +22-23C. If the waters are any cooler than +21C, I think a (separate) hood must be used.

The suits are a bit pricing for what I do (I have a cheaper 3/2 jumpsuit) but if I dove more, I'd buy Henderson since the hyperstretch material is great.

Chalk one up for Henderson. That's just what I wanted to know.
Thanks!

The only down side is that the outer material tends to "catch" and you will get "pills" and such quicker than a normal wet suit. Very comfy, but expensive.

I suppose that's from the stretchiness of the suit. My weight does fluctu"ate" a bit, so that would be a big plus.
Thanks!
ajtessier - 21 Dec 2005 00:03 GMT My wet suit keeps shrinking too!

Dan Bracuk If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure.
Mick - 21 Dec 2005 00:42 GMT > My wife loves her 5 mm Henderson Goldcore suit. That's good to hear Dan, since I just ordered two Henderson suits. Scuba.com had the Hyperstretch and the Goldcore for the same price, so I gave my wife a choice. She picked the Hyperstretch, so that's what I ordered. I'm thinking about ordering a couple of the hoods to go with them, but I'm not sure. I've never used a hood myself and I hear that a lot of people don't like them.

I don't wear one. My wife does.

mmsutton@gmail.com - 22 Dec 2005 21:19 GMT http://www.divesports.com has the Henderson Hyperstreches on sale right now.
You can go to the above URL, but because of Henderson's dealer agreement on 'minimum advertised price", they can't advertise any cheaper....
you have to call them on the phone to get it cheaper . 800-601-DIVE.
the 5mm is $255 and the 3mm is I think $225 or $230.
I just bought the 5mm. I haven't seen it that low of a price anywher elese.

FWIW, I found several reviews from people that have Hyperstretch suits and they all seem to love 'em. The women said it's the first suit that fits 'real' women. It's very easy to get into, and it stretches around their curves and doesn't crush their boobs. Some said the exterior of a Hyperstretch suit is easier to damage than regular neoprene though.
I went ahead and bought the matching hoods and gloves, so we should be good to go now. I can't wait to try mine out next month. C'mon vacation!

We have a handful of dive shops in our area, but they can't do our equipment service and never seem to have the items we want, in our size, or at a competitive price. Dive Sports, OTOH, meets all these criteria. It's 80 miles away, but it's where I go to shop. The owner, and his son, are good people and easy to deal with.

I can't wait to try mine out next month. C'mon > vacation! Fat women seem to really like them. The normal or non-stretchy suits are designed-it seems-for those of us who are in shape. I prefer the O'Neill suits to the Hendersons. My friend who is quite overweight just can't find one that fits her. I believe that the assumption with regular suits is that women who wear them are proportional *and* slim. If you have a big anything they are hard to fit.
I wonder if men have the same problem?
ben bradlee - 27 Dec 2005 01:36 GMT > I wonder if men have the same problem? Fitting difficulties are unisex but one would hope to maintain fitting individuality by bulging in locations related to one's sex.

I can't speak for other guys, but I've always had trouble finding one that would stretch enough to fit correctly from my crotch down to my knee. :)

But seriously. My husband has decided to break down this new year and buy a 3/2 for our liveaboard vacation. He is average height but has short legs (30 in inseam I believe) and a bit of a belly (36 in waist). Is there a brand that you gentlemen would recommend over another for him to try first? I was thinking Henderson stretch, but they are so pricey :-( He'll be buying it when we get to Miami so he won't have a lot of time to shop around. Buying a 3mm here at home is not possible--we live in Alaska. Dry suits galore but no real selection of 3mm or 3/2s.

So what if it costs a few dollars more. Whatever he gets, he has to wear diving, so he may as well get one that fits.

My new Henderson Hyperstretch Titanium wetsuit was waiting for me when I got home from work this afternoon. I got the fullsuit, hood, and gloves, all in 5mm, and it all fits great. This stuff really hugs the shape of your body and it feels very nice! It's easy to put on too. We got the same setup for my wife, but her suit was a little too big so we're exchanging it for a smaller size. I called the guys at Scuba.com and told them about it, and they're already shipping her new suit out to us. With Scuba.com you don't even need an RMA# to return or exchange a suit, but since we're leaving on our trip soon I wanted to make sure they had the new one in stock and get it on its way before they ran out of stock.
The 3mm Hyperstretch is $265.78 at Scuba.com. They also have the Tilos 3/2mm Superstretch Titanium fullsuit for $139.95. I don't know how good Tilos suits are, but, according to their ad, it sounds like the same material, "4-way Super-stretch stretches up to 250% more than standard neoprene" If you don't need the Superstretch neoprene, they have the Neosport by Henderson 3/2mm fullsuit for $72.95, or the XS Scuba 3mm Titanium suit for $89.95. They have others too, with some fullsuits going for only $39.95.
I know I probably sound like an ad for Scuba.com, but I'm not associated with them in any way, other then as a satisfied customer. I've bought a bunch of stuff from them over the past week or so and they really have been great. For instance, I ordered a Pelican 1660 dry box without the foam inserts (an $80 extra), and before they shipped it I found it elsewhere for about $100 less, with the foam inserts. I called them to cancel the order, but they offered to sell me the case with the foam inserts for an even better price. So, I got a very good deal on the case. (BTW, if you're looking for a good dry box, this 1660 is awesome!)
Irene - 28 Dec 2005 03:33 GMT > Why don't you buy a suit online and have it shipped to your door? I buy a lot online and bought my O'Neill 3/2 from Divers Direct. Perfect fit. But I had tried one on in a store once so I knew what size I needed. My husband is not so sure. Some of those charts don't match up with our measurements. Figured that in his case it would just be safer to stop at the first store we came across and that way he could try some on.

Believe me, none of the measurements they listed for the Hyperstretch suit, in any size, matched my... ummm... manly measurements (don't tell anyone, but it seems that some of my manly chest has somehow sunk down to my manly belly.)
Anyway, I just picked the size that was closest and it fits great. Their ad says, "Can be worn comfortably by multiple persons with different body types. Get a custom wetsuit without the added costs!"
It sounded good to me, and it is. YMMV

YMMV I wonder how they come up with those charts. With women, if we have a 36 chest then they think we must have a 27+ inch waist and even bigger thighs. Apparently the opposite is true also. A small waisted woman must be flat chested to fit into their size charts :-) O'Neill is the only one so far that has come even close to my measurements. It still bothers me that I take a size 6 in women's clothing but have to buy a size 10 in a wetsuit. Talk about making you feel like your fat when you're not.
The whole thing is comical. I'll have to try on a hyperstretch.

They probably figure that it isn't cost effective to make suits to fit 'other' body shapes. They just target the 'average' shapes and say to hell with the rest.
> The whole thing is comical. I'll have to try on a hyperstretch. You should. It's the most comfortable suit I've ever worn, and the easiest to get on too.

Dr Yak - 21 Dec 2005 01:56 GMT Try leisurepro.com They usually have them in stock, but a friend and I are looking for wet suits and they're both out of stock at a couple of on line stores. I'm looking for a Mares 3mm and he's looking for a Henderson 3mm XXL.
Mick - 24 Dec 2005 06:22 GMT Scuba.com has the Henderson 3mm XXL for $265.78, but I didn't see any Mares suits.
Irene - 21 Dec 2005 07:28 GMT Did you try onlinescuba.com for the O'Neill suits? They sell a bunch of different types.
Mick - 24 Dec 2005 06:26 GMT They're one of the few places that advertised the O'Neill dive suit that I was looking for, but they didn't actually have any in stock.
