I am trying to replace an o-ring in an underwater camera housing. The
manufacturer is no help at all. I have found several O-ring suppliers on
the internet, but they need technical specs to place an order. I can easily
provide them with measurements, but I'm having trouble identifying the
material of the o-ring. Can anyone tell me if the color of an o-ring
denotes the material it is made of? The one I wish to replace is bright
blue in color. Is there any other way for me to identify this O-ring?
If it's blue, it's probably silicone. You would also need to know the
durometer rating (hardness), for which you need a durometer.
McMaster-Carr has them.
But this is one of those "if you need to ask, you shouldn't be messing
about in there" questions.

Thanks Mr Tribolet,
I'm starting to think you're right. With so much equipment out there using
O-rings you'd think there would be an easier way to get them replaced. I've
spoken to a couple scuba equipment repair technicians and they seem to be in
the dark as much as any of us mortals.
Thanks for the response.
