There seems to be an organized effort to discredit Heimlich - again.
For those of us old enough to remember when the maneuver was first advocated
this paragraph:
"His opinion regarding the use of the Heimlich maneuver to treat
near-drowning victims is shared by the vast majority of the mainstream
medical community. From organizations such as the American Heart Association
and Red Cross to the prestigious Institute of Medicine to the nation's
leading experts on drowning, the body of opinion reached at this point is
virtually unanimous: Unless the victim is choking on something, there is no
scientific evidence justifying the use of the Heimlich maneuver in such
cases. In fact, it has the potential to add even more complications to an
already perilous situation."
has a familiar sound. The Red Cross and American Heart association fought
against it for years. Back blows are still in for infants and the reasoning
behind this *exactly* supports what Heimlich said about the old back-blows.
Neither ARC or AHA mention "Heimlich" to this day. But the method is taught.
