ScubaDan - 07 Feb 2008 01:31 GMT G'Day,
My name is Danny and I'm a PADI rescue diver. I recently emigrated over to Australia from the UK and so I have moved my newsgroup subscription from uk.rec.scuba to aus.sport.scuba.
There's only 22 subscribers to this newsgroup and so lets get a thread going to introduce ourselves and say hi.
Cheers, Danny

Probably do 30 odd dives a year, more if I holiday somewhere with good diving less if I'm busy with other things. Not into any of these fancy gas mixes and not involved in Tech diving in any way. This ng is pretty dead as you can see.
Anyhow welcome

I am French, live in the Philippines, but love so much Australia that I try to go whenever I can. I have been diving in Exmouth, Yongala, Whitsundays and 3 weeks ago, in Sydney
Cheers

I am now land locked in Canberra but try to get to the coast as much as possible although not impressed with most South Coast diving. Love Broulee and Montague haven't done anything at Jervis Bay yet.
I also run the Scuba Diving information web site ScubaZine.

Anonymous Loser - 09 Feb 2008 08:51 GMT > > G'Day, Hi All,
I'm Mick, diving since '99 mostly in and around Port Phillip Bay, get to Jervis Bay once a year or so, have dived the GBR and done a few in NZ. I am only open water certified, but have been diving mostly from private boats the last few years, so not in any hurry to pay for another course (although a deep rating would be handy).
The missus is a dive-con and does a bit of part time work helping out on courses things like that. We're also proud new owners of our first boat, a little rubber-duck we bought just before xmas...
Cheers, Mick G

Would of thought from Canberra that Jervis Bay would be your dive magnet. Good/great diving but not as great as the hype IMHO. What type of diving are you into?
Pat - 12 Feb 2008 20:39 GMT >>> G'Day, >>> [quoted text clipped - 18 lines] > Good/great diving but not as great as the hype IMHO. What type of diving > are you into? I'm another Canberra based diver. Do a lot at Bawley point and Ulladulla areas. Mainly shore based occasional boat trip. Been VERY busy with work recently so have not got the fins wet in a couple of months. Suffering major withdrawal. Cheers

Yes it is a magnet but being 3+hours away and having three small kids makes it a little hard. I am not a technical diver I like shore dives (Dont like spending too much money). Love to night dive but have not done for years. Use to dive almost everynight in Tassy with a mate at one stage finding new shore dives and just jumping in where there was water.
Love areas full of life not interested in catching just watching.
So I get wet via the web now days and the occasional dive. My oldest son is 10 and really wants to get into it but I think he can wait.

Saying that I have dived in Hobart with the Uni looking for those walking fish they were cute and weird

ScubaDan - 14 Feb 2008 06:05 GMT > >>>> G'Day, > [quoted text clipped - 46 lines] > > - Show quoted text - I didn't actually say in my intro but I'm Brisbane based and am going on my first local dive since moving to Australia on Sunday. I am planning to go up to Maroochydore and dive the Ex HMAS Brisbane with Sunreef.
There seems to be some excellent sites all around Brisbane so it makes quite a change from Reading in the UK.
I'm sure that I've read somewhere that Asthma doesn't prevent someone diving and I believe that swimming is quite beneficial.

I am no doctor but when I was told this it seemed to be said with some conviction.
Been a while since I did my original course but I am sure Asthmatics are not allowed to dive.
I am also sure that every rule can be broken :-)
I am sure you could ask the Oracle (google)

excellent , worse places than Brissie in the world

I think I've been to Reading in the distant past. Got talked into diving when I was in the UK. It was cold, there was no vis, there was a huge current and the wreck that I was hanging onto was not that interesting. Beer was warm and I loved it and the local lifeboat crew type blokes ( and sheilas ) were great. They couldn't understand me an I couldn't understand them, a few beers who gives a ..............

Swimming yes... diving no, you could check the DAN website for more information at http://www.danseap.org/
This document is pointed to from the DAN page: http://home.vicnet.net.au/~dandoc/pdfdoc/asthma1.pdf
And this one may have more information: http://home.vicnet.net.au/~dandoc/pdfdoc/asthma.pdf
In general the problem is the bronchial constriction. If the bronchii close up during a dive, the lungs have a problem on the ascent.
Further to this a couple of comments. I've heard of "exercise" or stress induced asthma -- clearly this could a problem.
Also, suppose a diver uses bronchio-dialator drugs and the drugs wear off during the dive? Not pretty.
I do most of my diving in and around Melbourne, but have been a few places in South Australia and Tassie. And, of course, up top the Reef.
Lots of good wrecks in our area as well as a temperate water ecosystem that's colourful in its own right while completely different from the GBR.

Scott & Cynthia - 07 Mar 2008 10:46 GMT >>> >>>> G'Day, >>> [quoted text clipped - 94 lines] > > -Don Hi,
I don't get to dive much anymore, family keeps me busy and broke. I am living in Melbourne but home will always be Papua New Guinea. My family have the Rapopo Plantation Resort in Rabaul and I have been spoilt with the wreck dives up there in 30oC water. If anyone is looking at some wreck diving i could strongly suggest Rabaul.
Has anyone had any experience with Tri mix diving? would love to have a chat about a possible wreck dive in rabaul at about 320 ft

DiverPhill - 26 Mar 2008 02:50 GMT Gday All I'm Phill from Mandurah WA. Love to dive (and fish) whenever I find the time mainly around Fremantle, Rockingham, Mandurah, Bunbury & Busselton. My wife is a PADI advanced & I'm a divemaster.

Just curious.
