Hello everyone,
I've been out of diving for a little while now, and apart from a refresher
course, I need to get a new watch as my old one saht itself the other week.
I'm trying to get an analog - as opposed to digital - watch suitable for
sports diving. I probably shant be going much deeper than 30 metres and
really do not need all the bells and whistles that seem to come with the
more "professional" type of watch. I think I will need to spend some $$$
but not the $650.00 and up I have been quoted for a couple of Citizen
models. I'm hoping to get away with something in the $250.00 - $400.00
range, or am I living in the past? Admitidly I brought my last watch - a
"Loyal"a tad over 13 years ago for $150.00, and always had trouble when it
was time to replace the batteries.
Any help, on or off line will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Dave

Hi David,
I changed my diving watch a few days ago, and got me a SEIKO SKX007K
(200 m W.R., automatic, analog) for a good price at
www.skywatches.com.sg. It's an authentic watch with guarantee. Think
about extra fees such as customs taxes. I dove once with it and, up to
now, I'm 100% satisfied with this buy.
Bye,
Will

I've always gone elcheapo with watches, my latest $150 Shark Precision.
I don't like the big bulky gungho style watches that look like Big Ben
on a strap as I also use it for other water sports. This one looks
like an ordinary watch except with the rotating bezel.
If your in Perth I got it at the Dive Superstore.

Can I ask why?
Another alternative (if digital) would be an electronic depth gage,
they are around $250 new.

I have a Momentum 500m, it's a nice, affordable, reliable little watch.

Uh... there's tons of options out there. My wife has gone through several
Seikos, Citizens and such in your price range.
Still, there's nothing like a fine swiss watch. My Omega SeaMaster has been
with me for about 20-years so far. It expect it will outlast me! I wish I
could convince my wife to go ahead let us pick out a nice TAG/Heuer or
Omega for her. It's a little costly upfront (still a lot less than Rolex
or Breitling), but would probably save money in the long run.

Jack

Upon further review I probably didn't do a very good job of making my point
in the wee hours of posting.
My Omega SeaMaster has been with me a few years longer than my wife, but in
my 15 years with her she has gone through 7 or 8 cheaper dive watches.
Getting her C-card was my one stipulation that I negotiated against going
through pre-Canan classes and signing away my kids' religious education in
order to get married in her church.
Anyway, all those watches of hers have been decent brands of the Japanese
ilk. One was lost while diving... whether it was because of the junky
rubber strap, carelessness or that shark that bit her hand off (just
kidding), I do not know. Another is MIA dry-land... probably hiding in the
house somewhere, but doing a very good job of it. The other 5 or 6 crapped-
out in one way or another... whether from flooding while diving or just
giving out sitting in a drawer. All in all, her parade of so-so dive
watches cost as much as my one good one. So, we may have been better off
buying her a TAG or such to start with... although I guess there is no way
to know if it would still be residing on her arm or buried in the sea floor
somewhere... whichever, I bet it'd still be ticking away.
Nevertheless, if you take good care of your stuff, find yourself a good
Swiss watch and push your budget to it's limit. I saw a post the other day
on SM by a guy retiring out off his LDS that listed, among other high-end
items, a Breitling Oceanmaster for $600 (I think). I don't know if it's
still available or even if the deal was real, but finding a bargain like
that would certainly make the decision for me!

Ooops... make that read Breiting Superocean. /JA

Nevermind the Breitling. There's an indication now that that offer posted
on the other thread was fraud. Sorry if I got anyones hopes up... or
worse, steered them into the clutches of a theif.

This thread got me interested in looking around at the current availability
out there of more reasonably priced dive watches. Regardless of my bent
for Omega's and such, I found something else that intrigued me enough to
buy. Take a look at Invicta's offering... and it is an extensive (though
NOT EXPENSIVE) offering.
Invicta's standard Pro Dive line includes several different finishes and
colors AND includes a choice of 4 different movements. It's a Swiss
company, but you can get these watches with either Japanese or Swiss
movements and, in each case, you can choose between Quartz or automatic
(self-winding mechanical) movements... it just depends on the price you're
willing to pay with options running from about $85 online for the Japanese
Quartz up to around $350 with Swiss auto. In between, you can get them
with either a Swiss Quartz or Japanese Miyoto auto movement for around $100-
$120. They're all rated to 200m and there are also a myriad of other
styles in Invicta's Ocean Ghost, Elite (w/ chrono), Abyss and Monster
lines. The auto-winders have a window on the back where you can see the
intricacies of the movement at work without cracking open the watch to do
so.
I'm not affiliated with Invicta or any of the online dealers that sell them
(and there are several... just Google "Invicta Watches"). I simply found
these very appealing at a very reasonable price. So much so that I ordered
one for myself as well as a ladies model for my wife and thought I'd spread
the word

Jack
